Our OK Go adventure...

edited November -1 in OK Go
Hey guys! I've just joined, my friend Liz (not sure of her u/n on here is...) recommended I join, and told me to tell you all about the adventure myself and my friend Michael embarked on.

It all started when we decided we should try and get into the soundcheck at King Tut's, Glasgow. Thanks to the lovely staff and Mike, we ended up allowed in to watch!

Of course, as we were in the soundcheck, it means we got to witness the wondrous powercut in all its glory. First the lights in the 'venue' part of Tut's went out, and during the blackout-of-sorts Damian came over and asked us if we were "the guys who came in for the soundcheck?" and we had a chat about a few things. He's such a cool, cool guy.

After a while, the power went throughout the venue and we waited as the situation was updated: an electrician was on his way; he wasn't sure if power could be brought back into the venue tonight; at the very least it would take 2 hours to achieve power again. So, unfortunately, the show was called off.

As soon as Damian heard this, he suggested an acoustic set outside. Immediately, this plan was being implemented, with the (I'm guessing) manager of Tut's discussing how they were going to set everything up, and saying how he really wanted to see the guys doing this. Michael asked Damian where the band were next playing and he replied "In Manchester, tomorrow. You guys coming?" We said we weren't sure, but we'd try, and he told us to give our names to Mike and he'd put us on the guestlist! We were thrilled.

We followed the band outside from the back entrance and round to the front of the venue, where we saw a mass of people listening to the venue manager dude telling them all what was about to happen. The band went up the stairs, sat down and played their set. It was fantastic! 'Invincible' sounded so much better in an acoustic setting than I would have expected, and 'Oh Lately It's So Quiet' was just sublime.

Then... the dance. I was right at the front and it was possibly the greatest thing I've ever seen: an American rock band dancing in the cold and wet streets of Glasgow, surrounded by cheering fans. As the police had intervened after the acoustic set, it meant that no music could be played, so rather than dancing along to the CD the band sorta sang along while they danced (which meant, nearing the end, there was a lot of panted "zero zero zero"s!).

The band were great, very friendly, and the crowd seemed more than happy to be treated to such an exclusive event. I sure as hell was. Myself and Michael actually managed to get down to Manchester the next day (after frantically booking buses and a hotel in the early hours once we got home) and witnessed the gig at Night&Days. The band were on top form! And, of course, Damian was hilarious and charming, except for when the mic-stand went wonky and the venue took forever getting a replacement and he got pissed off. It wasn't a bad thing really though, because this all happened before' Get Over It' so Damian's vocals were even more aggressive! All was fixed eventually and he did apologise for how he acted, but in truth we were all with him... I mean imagine not having any spare equipment near the stage?!

So yeah, that was my first live experience of OK Go, and quite an experience it was! Thanks so much to Mike, Damian and the rest of the guys, and hi to everyone on the forum! I look forward to posting here.

If you want to see pictures, go to http://photobucket.com/albums/b233/_deeperthewound/OK%20Go/ I must warn you though that there's a lot of random pictures on there which will only make sense to me and my friend, so just ignore 'em and focus on the amazingness of the band wink.gif.

Thanks!
Richard

  • hey sounds like an amazing adventure... also you have some awesome pictures....
I feel stupid for asking but whats the blue thingi that Tim is holding when hes on the steps?
  • Thankyou!

Tim's got a... mini xylophone I guess. My musical terminology isn't great right now.

We were in luck because the guys had performed an acoustic set for XFM radio earlier on, and so had all their equipment with them - that included!
  • I am extremely jealous right now. You had the perfect OK Go experience! I want to rip it out of your brain and put it into mine.

    But gently, of course!
  • Aw, that's sweet! In a disturbing way wink.gif
  • I love picture 16!!! that is the funniest andy expression ever!!! HAHA the sheet for the progector fell down the first time I saw Ok Go too...i wonder if that was due to the fact it was held up with duct-tape... tongue.gif . It looks like you had a blast.

    I second that.

Rusty's shirt is freaking awesome. I want it.
Tim is really good at making funny faces. (Or you're just really good at capturing them on film.)
Damian is skiiiiinnnny. Seriously. I think the darkish colours from head to toe accentuate that. (But that's not bad, I like skinny boys. biggrin.gif)
Umm...and Dan is cool. biggrin.gif again.
  • Hahaha yeah, my camera's a bit slow at taking pictures so quite often a lovely smile will turn out looking ridiculous hehe.

I think it makes these pics more interesting though, all the crazy facial expressions.
  • haha I LOVE MIKE!!!....................
