Where is OK Go?

edited November -1 in OK Go
A number of people have posted how they keep watching for shows local to them (& sometimes miss them) and I thought,
"wouldn't it be great if there was a map and people could see if OK Go was playing nearby?" blink.gif

So I made one. laugh.gif Where is OK Go? Map (U.S. and Canada)

This is my first, quick'n'dirty version -- however I did put in every show I know about through July 1st on here so I thought I'd put it up right away as it has some usefulness in its present form. Scroll over bullet points to see a show's specific details.

If you know of shows that aren't on here, feel free to message me with the info and I'll add it (including street addresses if you've got them). I'd originally intended it to be something with a calendar and interactive so anyone could update it -- but I haven't gotten to it (yet).

Too bad I didn't start this two years ago, when OK Go hit the road.

Let me know what you think. biggrin.gif

Note (updated): Zoom is semi-functional. You have to close the pop up window before zoom will work, and you can't click right on the bullet point for the show. Click nearby but not directly on the bullet for where you want to get to and it will zoom. 5-6 clicks will get you all the way down from the continental map to street level.

That's a very cool idea, just so you know, OK Go's been touring for quite a bit more than two years
  • this is a really helpful/awesome idea, keaton.

even though it keeps reminding me that there aren't any OK Go shows in my area for forever, and I get slightly depressed...haha.

I think this is a great idea.
*sings "Where in the world is OK Go" to the Carmen San Diego tune* (and fails)

Yeah, I know. I was just carelessly rounding because I've lost track. I'm more counting the days forward to them getting back into the studio. smile.gif

By the time OK Go finishes in the studio (when something like this might prove really useful), this might be antiquated technology (thus useless); but it was something my mind kept puzzling over, so I did it anyways.

Me too, except I saw them last month so I'm not complaining.

Yes, I'm counting down as well! I think they've been touring for about seven years now, though I'm not 100% on that. Also, I posted a link to the map you made on the facebook group

Well, not seven years straight! I'm sure she was talking about the "latest" bunch of touring, which has been just over two years ...

Yeah, that's what I thought she meant too.

Thanks for the map Keaton, it's a very cool idea!
  • Hmm, Can everyone else load the map? For the past two days Firefox tells me "connection refused". Maybe it doesn't work for those of us overseas.

    Cool idea, though!

Glad you like the idea! smile.gif

I don't think it is the site - although you are saying it is the site itself. If you want to message me and give me more details of your experience/what happens, I'll do some troubleshooting.

The map is run through Mapquest's Open Source project so I would think if you can see Mapquest maps, you should be able to see this one.

The map runs on AJAX/Java, so if you don't have Java enabled or your security setting at high, that might explain it (since Java is an executable able to run programs on people's programs, sometimes security software or IT folks disable it).
  • Thanks keaton -- it's loading for me now, though. Weird!

The message I was getting before, seemed to be from their server. I'm just using a home computer and have Java 5. A little box would pop up telling me "connection refused" which tends to be a server message.

But I could see the map this morning!

Haha, good point, that was one of my "smart moments", somehow that didn't even occur to me

Awesome. I'm glad it's working. I've been fiddling with it and updating it. It now has the Japan shows on it (except Mapquest doesn't support street maps outside of the U.S. so it is just the cities).

I'm going to try and keep it current so if anyone hears of a new show, feel free to ping me.
  • This turned out really nice!
  • damn! It won't work on my computer! sad.gif

It doesn't seem to work on my old computer running Windows 98, so it doesn't work on everything...but, if you want to message me about what is happening with you, I'll troubleshoot it. smile.gif

fwiw, you probably aren't missing much. It's just a Mapquest map of the world - with markers and dates for OK Go shows - and you can zoom in to street level to see exactly where each show is happening (for shows for which I have addresses).

Thanks Sheri! 'Tis nothing compared to your splendiferous okgocentral.com!!!!

I used the B&W map version so that markers would show up. The markers stay the same size, so even though - from a global view - they appear to have thoroughly dominated the Northeastern Seaboard, once you zoom in, they get lost quickly in the colorized maps.

I wonder if my next step in this project, instead of trying to make a calendar and an XML feed, is to make this something one can view on their cell phone. Then one could actually use the map in realtime to find their way to the concert...hmmm. how to do that? Don't hold your breath waiting, though. smile.gif I'll let you know if I pull it off.

Michael's and my okgocentral.com--I can't apply a "my" to that in good conscience! And thanks, but that's definitely not true. I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to do what you've done. Makes my brain hurt thinking about it--good job!

Holy cow, you are an ambitious woman. This would be amazing if you can do it! Wow!!

ah ha ha ha! It's not as hard as it looks. All the heavy lifting was done by the Open source community. Part of my interest is seeing how far Open source has come/is going. I'm definitely not a programmer. rolleyes.gif I also just wanted a visual / a map! smile.gif and no one was making one, so I did. Then I was so excited, I couldn't just keep it to myself! laugh.gif

Right now it's more a Dr. Seuss machine than anything useful (unless OK Go gets lost on their way to a gig...doubtful...)

By the way, I LOVE the ping pong video!!! Great catch!

    Whoa! To infinity and beyond!

Well, as far as the map goes, I'm still impressed. wink.gif
  • I've updated the map to include OK Go's tour dates in Spain and Taiwan (July) and Japan, Australia and Austria (August). Damian mentioned in an interview that they are also going to be in New Zealand, and some other unspecified festivals in Europe. This info (except for Japan) isn't on the official website yet, so I thought I'd move this post back up to the top.
