Jem and the Holograms

edited November -1 in General Discussion
Can cartoon bands have their own thread under the musical discussion page? Well, they do now! Fel reminded me of my utter love growing up with "Jem and the Holograms." I actually like their arch rivals the Misfits best.

Hasbro toy company created a series of dolls to compete with Barbie. The dolls were a girl rock band called Jem and the Holograms. Hasbro had a prominent cartoon company create a cartoon show about the dolls and their adventures. Jem was supposed to be a girl named Jerrica Benton. She inherited a girl's orphan home. Her father was also an inventor and left Jerrica a giant computer/hologram creator known as "Synergie." In order to finance the girl's orphan home, Jerrica would use Synergie to make her and her friends become a rock band. Their band was called Jem and the Holograms. Jerrica had a boyfriend named Rio. He was manager of the band and never caught on that Jem and Jerrica were really the same person. The Misfits were another girl band who were in competition with Jem and the Holograms.

For those of you who don't remember Jem:

This Misfits song was my most favorite song when I was little! (It's callled "Universal Appeal."):

i think i would have liked this show. lol electric drum pads and pink keyboards... too rad.
  • Oh, that show was awesome. It was sort of educational too. I think it spawned my early love of music. I learned a lot about the music industry without even realizing it at the time.
  • shades loves jem!.. one question she also asks the bands that she interviews is "jem or the misfits" hehe...
  • is it odd that i'm jealous of a cartoon characters clothing?!? haha... jem's polka dot dress is awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q18JYtHhT9Y

yeah this show does seem awesome. And the dresses the doll wears is so unconventional. Not just poofy princess gowns and stuff. Too cool

Yeah, the show was total girl power, and way too deep for a cartoon show. Not only did Jem have great clothes, she had fantastic accessories. The doll had flashing earings.

Are you talking about Pizzazz's dress (the girl with the green hair who is leader of the Misfits)?

Lol, darbie, I agree! I'm very jealous of that dress. I bet you could reproduce it nicely.

um the one riding around on the dress rack and the lightning bolt! her name is Pizzazz? INTENSE
  • My only thing is that during the Jem theme song, when the Misfits sing "But we're the Misfits, our songs are better, we are the Misfits, the Misfits, and we're gonna get 'er", it's ONE REPEATED NOTE with a little melodic twirl at the end. HOW IS THAT BETTER? How is one note better than a melody?! Are they really that deep in denial?
  • Um, wow. There's actually a convention for Jem fans that's held once a year now. It called Jemcon:

Some karoke by Jem cosplayers (sorta disturbing):

Those cosplayers are supposed to be portraying the Misfits:
