Respect
I remember the first time I listened to her, during the period when my now-boyfriend was just my Library Friend, handing off music to me every other week. I remember listening to it and being a little terrified; I had never heard songs so open, so willing to be sad or happy, so unafraid to show any emotion. Her own private exorcisms.
When my then-library friend became my now-boyfriend, we would occasionally sit on the bed and listen. I remember him laughing along with one of her songs, saying that he liked it because he felt that she just got whomever together and said, "Hey! You want to play on this track? You say you don't have any musical ability? That's OK! Just play!" And it's true. It's great because it doesn't try to be anything and, by doing so, allows you to feel everything.
I put her on when I'm sad or lonely and her songs, quiet and lovely, just remind me that it's alright, that the day will go on and things will get better.
