At just six minutes, the piece
evokes more wonder and delight than many companies' full evenings.

  • I'm working on it, promise.  There's just so much to say and I can only type so fast. :-)
  • I've been working on this post all day, and it's taking awhile.  Here is Part 1, just to start you off:

You know that old adage “Never meet your heroes”?  It’s bullshit.  No really, it is.  This is why: if your heroes are the type of person to disappoint you, then you are admiring the wrong person.

This is not to say that heroes are not human, not prone to moments where they could potentially hurt you unintentionally.  Of course that could happen.  But when it really, truly counts, your heroes will come through for you.

Last night I went to see OK Go dancing with Pilobolus Dance Company in New York.  The band was to dance one routine with the troupe, and the rest of the night would be solely Pilobolus.  I’m not quite sure what I was expecting.  I arrived at the Joyce Theater at 8th Ave. and 18th St., and met Skylar, his parents, and Asher.  Skylar I know from the boards, and Asher is a friend of his.  They’d come from Connecticut and New Hampshire, respectively.  Skylar was up with his parents in a side box, and Asher was seated a few rows behind me.  We chatted for a few minutes, and then went to our seats.  I flipped out a little when the ushers handed me a Playbill for the evening.  A real, honest to goodness Playbill with bios on the dancers, the choreographers (including Trish!), and OK Go.  My inner theater geek was jumping up and down.  I took my seat and waited for the show to begin.  I was seated all the way over on one side of the room.

I was seated next to an older woman (think 60s or 70s) and her adult son.  Her son was a huge Pilobolus fan.  Apparently he comes to these things all the time.  Mom was somewhat nonplussed by the evening, as best I could tell. Which was unsurprising.  The troupe was awesome, and their dances were thought-provoking and entertaining.  I enjoyed it a lot.  But the whole evening was quite Post-Modern, and there was a fair amount of nudity.  Not the kind of thing I’d necessarily bring my mother to, no matter how cool she is.

OK Go’s dance was at the beginning of the second half.  The guy sitting next to me was discussing what to expect with his mom.  They were trying to figure out if OK Go would be playing the music or dancing.  I explained to them that they would be dancing.  That got us started talking; they asked me how I knew the band, and I explained that I was a very big fan.  Then the lights went out for the performance.  Just as we all had expected, they danced on a glass platform with a camera shooting up from underneath.  There was a screen set up on the other side of the stage, so you could watch the camera.  Damian came out first to poke his head in the shot, and (I’m guessing) make sure everything was ready to go.  Then the rest of the troupe and the band came out and started the dance.  It was an extra long version of All Is Not Lost, with an extra guitar solo.  The intro is also slightly longer.  Usually you get that one count in measure of drums before the guitar and vocals kick in, but the count in was a little longer.  Not sure why.  There were some fantastic scenes played out on the glass.  Kaleidoscopes, a person falling and begging to be pulled up, a mermaid swimming in the sea, and yes, Andy as an insect.  I wasn’t sure where to look; the screen or the platform.  I chose the screen mostly, but that’s my one regret about the evening, not watching the platform.  I think I probably missed a few things as a result.  But guys, if the video is half as awesome as the stage performance, you will be blown away.  More on that later.

At the end of the routine, the curtain dropped to change the stage for the last performance.  The crowd ERUPTED into hoots and hollers and everyone cheered LOUDLY for the performance.  While they did the changeover, the guy sitting next to me commented that he’d been to many Pilobolus shows, and he’d NEVER heard anything get a reaction like that.  He was amazed.  His mom, who had seemed somewhat bored all evening, thoroughly enjoyed OK Go’s performance.  After the last routine, the guy said to me, “I guess I’ll see you at the next OK Go concert” and smiled.  They made a new fan.  Yay!

I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH SPACE IN MY FACE FOR THE SMILE THAT'S BUILDING UP HERE

  • My turnnn!!  Starting at the theater With Rachel and Ash:

We stood outside talking for a bit, got our tickets, went in, and
found out that my seats and Ash and Rachel’s seats were at opposite ends
of the theater.. that’s the problem with buying at separate times.  xP

But the show started.  The first dance had to do with aging, I
think.. or at least the beginning and end did but I lost track in the
    middle.. I dunno.

The second piece had to do with God screwing around with stuff, I think..

The third was just really intense and amazing.

It was intermission, then, so I went downstairs to meet Ash and Rachel.

Walked up to Rachel and made a crack about the amazing bodies of the
dancers and feeling bad for the boys in spandex unitards with them
before Rachel pointed out that Trish Sie had walked by and looked at my
shirt (the 180/365 shirt) and grinned.. and then that Ambra was there.
Asher started making fun of my jitteriness and smiliness as Rachel
    walked away and.. gfffrg..

Rachel came back, we talked a bit, went back up to my seat, show started again.

It was time for All is Not Lost.

The dance was just.. it was so amazing.  It was just.. amazing. I
don’t even know.  It was really really really cool and everybody was
clapping and laughing and loving it, in the audience, and the boys
looked so happy and all of the dancers were smiling.

After it was over I looked over to Ambra (or the woman who at that
point I thought was Ambra, but wasn’t sure).  She started with many
thumbs ups and fist pumps and when I looked where she was looking Trish
was returning the gesture - needless to say it was confirmed that it was
Ambra.  And it was adorable..  they were grinning and it.. yeahhh.

The next dance was really intense too - music composed by Brian Eno
and the Talking Heads.  The ‘closing credits’ of sorts were done with
everybody sliding around water that had been put on the floor goofing
around.. true to form, Damian was splashing everybody, Tim was
pretending to be a speed skater, Dan was being awkward and Andy was
being lazy.  Yup, those are our boys.

Show ended, went out into the front to wait for Ash and Rachel..

When Ash and I met up we say Rachel talking to Trish.

I walked up nervously and awkwardly until Rachel introduced us.. we
talked a lot about the video and how it would be different and even
cooler, supposedly, than what we had seen.. goddamn I’m curious, ‘cause
what we saw was AMAZING.  And.. I won’t say more, but just.. it needs to
    come out..

And we talked for a bit about how nervous she had been and I
complimented her choreography and then she walked away saying to stick
around, the band would probably come up.

    So we did.

So we were waiting and watching the boys down below us at this press
party type thing for all of the important people, watching as they
mingled and stuff with a lovely birds-eye view.

And then Rachel went as far down as she could to flag Dan.. and had a
conversation, and pointed up to us, and he was like “I’ll come up.”  He
went to get a drink before coming up, but he came up…

And introduced himself and thanked us for coming and was just a
sweetheart and Rachel got a picture but he had to go pay attention to
the speech.. still.  It was amazing.  And.. aoisdgh.  :)

There was a speech and at one point someone was introduced and Damian
was the loudest and cutest, of course, and Tim was standing in the back
being BAMF and Andy was somewhere and it was fun.

The speech ended and we watched as Damian mingled, slowly moving out
of the press party.. getting stopped right below the stairs.. short
conversations, let somebody else up the stairs before him.. coming up
    the stairs.. me freaking out…

And then he was there, giving us all high fives (this was one of my
few flubs, as I accidentally almost stole Ash’s and got ‘yelled at’ by
Damian).  And he recognized Ash and then remembered talking to me and
    just.. I.. gffffggg…

And we talked about how intense the dancing was and how it was like
going from touch football to one game of Pro football and how amazing
the collaboration was and how what we had seen was really awesome but
what we would was 500 times cooler, and then he was talking about how
usually the audience is crickets on opening night because it’s all the
important people so the massively positive reaction to their dance was
amazing and there was this woman who was usually totally serious who was
soooo happy that it was taken so well.

I think it was then that we got our picture.. it took effort to keep
my cheeks from shaking, just so you know how much I was inwardly
    freaking right then.

Rachel went to get something from her bag so I took the chance to tell Damian that it was his fault that I wear awesome socks.

He then showed me his socks and started talking about how he was
wearing boring socks that night and felt bad (he was) and suddenly we
were talking about socks.. he said the reason for the boringness was a
long story and I was saying I was let down and he agreed and apologized
again and said that he had just bought a ton of awesome socks so this
was the calm before the storm.

And then Tim came up and introduced himself while Damian and Rachel
talked about how she was rated the best musician in Delaware and Tim
remembered Ash and through it, me, and I said we both survived the
rapture, which started a conversation about how much we both liked
    living.

“Yeah, I like it more than I expected, actually..”

He asked where we came from and I said that my home was where the
first show of theirs I saw was and we started talking about the venue
and the show and how there used to be a bar separating the drunks from
the twelve year olds but now they’re free to mingle, which was good,
because he felt like it was unamerican, and then admitted he wasn’t a
huge patriot but it had been unamerican to split people up, and hindered
    awesome rock shows.

And then Damian started leaving and Tim and Rachel started talking
about the Delaware thing and Damian was intercepted by my mum, who
thanked him for being such a sweetheart to his fans and then asked if
the guy with the crazy hair was David Byrn (it was David Zane), at which
point he mentioned a book his parents had gotten him and how awesome it
was because they weren’t huge music people, and then he walked away,
    leaving us with Tim.

We got a picture and talked a bit more about how they weren’t coming
to New England anymore and discussed what they were working on, a few
projects, it turns out, and he said they’d start touring again properly
in winter/spring next year, and then he had to walk away, and my parents
said we had to go to catch our train (before Andy could come up.
    ><).  So we left and Rachel stayed and Ash decided he’d come home
with me so we bought him a ticket and I couldn’t stop grinning and
saying “That actually just happened…” the whole train ride and just..
    gffff..

And we got home and went to bed and…

    I can’t even like..

For the pictures I had Damian’s and Tim’s and Dan’s arms around me
and I put my arm around the small of Damian’s back (really shakily)
because I didn’t know what else to do and I just can’t stop being amazed
    and happy and… gfff..

I had one other flub where I said everybody instead of everywhere,
otherwise I think I played it surprisingly cool, considering the level
    of freakout inside of me..

And that actually happened.. like properly.. it wasn’t a dream.. damnnnnnn…
