So...the results are in...

edited November -1 in OK Go
...and I guess the vote went to "Do What You Want" as the first single. Personally, I'm disappointed and am wondering if those who voted for this song are new to Ok Go. I've been a fan for quite some time (and no, I don't mean to sound condescending by this...) and I don't think that this song sounds anything like the Ok Go I fell in love with (in fact, it doesn't even sound like Ok Go period, especially the vocals...what have they done to Damian's voice?). Frankly, I'm getting really tired of this distorted vocal/guitar, "garage band" sound and don't think this is the time for Ok Go to be hopping on that bandwagon. I really like "Invincible", because I think it sounds like Ok Go...very unique stylistically and lyrically...and that's what attracted me to this band in the first place (and I'm sure that's why they used to open for TMBG...that was my first exposure to them...).

Oh well...I'm still a fan...I still support them and will definitely buy the new album. I'm just bummed that "Do What You Want" might be someone's introduction to Ok Go and I don't think it does them justice...it doesn't really capture their essence (but they recorded it, so who am I to judge?).

  • Yeah but if a band does the same old thing tme and time again and doesn't at least try new stuff they'll die a slow painful lonely death in some public toilet. A band should always try new things, experiment with their sound whether it works or not. Your least favourite song will be somoene elses favourite. And you've only heard two songs, whos to say the rest of the album isn't the same okgo we all love to hate... eer.. i mean, we all love!

And you cant say that Do What You Want isn't still in that Ok Go style, and i struggle to think that there are new ok go fans out there before the new songs are out, or at least enough to influence a vote.

Im quite aggressive... I think i need a theoropist
  • ummm i dunno i like "do what you want", for some reason it reminds me of "dont ask me"........im not really sure why though. haha and yes i've liked ok go since before their first cd came out and i really liked both of the songs, i even voted for "do what you want", because i think DWYW was the best choice for a single kinda like "get over it" wasnt ok's best song on the first cd either, it also sounded different from the rest of the other songs on the cd, it sounded more garage band-y, but i dunno DWYW kinda grew on me and now i love it, at first i liked "invincible" more. but anyways i think they made the right decision, but of course this is all my opinion

and invincible has distorted guitars too blink.gif
  • how do you know do what you want won? Spill the beans
  • Mr. Mr. Jorge, Whom I Adore, Whom I Adore said so in the newsletter that he sends to everyone on the OK Go mailing list.
  • well, i'd take a wild guess that it won because the single with the 2 tracks (and a Cure cover!! ooo!!) is called "Do What You Want" wink.gif

and the cover is adorable smile.gif
  • Even if "Do What You Want" doesn't really reflect Ok Go's old style i think it is somethign that a bunch of people will love, and after you love one okgo song you love all of them. I think it's the type of song that will get them to exposure they deserve. "Invincible" is an awesome song, and who knows what they will release as a second single? I just think they need something really strong, and "Do What You Want" will do just that.

  • Im part of the mainling list - got an e-mail about the start of the tour but nothing really about the new single and they're still takign votes. And how do you know the track listings.. Why am i so bloody stooopid
  • He specifically said in the newsletter that he's not going to say which got the most votes or which each band member wanted, but only that DWYW is the new single. It couldve gotten less votes for all we know.
I agree with Revolver. Bands need to change their sound. It's all about growing into your own. Each cd a band puts it gets closer and closer to what the band truly is.
I'm a longggggggtime fan of OK Go, and I voted for DWYW. I liked it better. And I do think it will be a better first single. The first single is always key. I just think of Maroon5 when i say this, because their first single Harder to Breathe got much less airtime over This Love, and I'd say Maroon5 was lucky in that they did get lucky with This Love. We don't want OK Go to have to be lucky to make it big. They DESERVE to make it big. Invincible will make a BRILLIANT second single once DWYW hits no. 1
  • I also think that Harder to Breathe is not a true reflection on the rest of the album. This Love and She Will Be Loved is.. although Harder to Breathe is much better than this love. I hope the album sounds more like Invincible. And after all Get Over It was a one off track on the album really
  • very true. I was surprised the whole album didnt sound like Get Over It. But I ended up loving the rest of the album. Yet I still loved Get Over It. It's weird how it all works.
  • Get Over It was the shinning light in a vast bleak musical dullness that was around at the time. Nu-Metal was running riot, RnB was dominating the charts and Boy Bands where punishing our ears with their weak attempts at love songs. Ok Go just made music fun again. Get Get Get Get Get Over It

    hmm
when you put it that way
although get over it was not the best single for the album, it was the best single for the times.
  • I liked that, seems very poetic and makes Ok Go look like saviours of popular music

it was fun. except once Mr. Mr. Jorge, Whom I Adore, Whom I Adore blocked me out of the room when he was playing around with the controls. and then made fun of me.
    but
it was still lots of fun.
    and probably dead now.
