OK Go Set To Take America's Airwaves; "So What Else Is News?"

As OK Go's forthcoming single "Do What You Want" is poised to garner summer spins across America's airwaves, the band is preparing for another kind of radio campaign -- one notable for its defiant lack of spin.

Beginning June 4th (3-5PM ET), Capitol recording artists OK Go will appear as regular guests on the Air America Radio program "So What Else Is News?" Singer Damian Kulash and bassist Tim Nordwind will submit monthly reports to show host Marty Kaplan, providing listeners a mix of music and industry commentary, tales from the rock 'n' roll road, and a healthy dose of the unexpected. In conjunction with the Air America appearances, the band is creating a special series of podcasts, segments of which will be played over the air. These podcasts feature Damian and Tim interviewing some of the country's best interviewers, including radio and television personalities such as Ira Glass, David Brancaccio and Jonathan Goldstein, and will complement the well-publicized series of fan friendly podcasts the band is producing for their website.

"So What Else Is News?" with host Marty Kaplan explores the intersection of media, pop culture, and politics. Kaplan uses his years as a media investigator to deconstruct the top stories of the day. With an estimated three million weekly listeners, Air America Radio is heard on more than 50 stations nationwide as well as XM Satellite Radio, Sirius Satellite Radio, and AirAmerica.com.

In other OK Go news, release of the band's hotly anticipated second album, Oh No, has been set for August 30th. The album - which follows 2002's #1 "Heatseekers" self-titled debut - was recorded in Malmo, Sweden in late 2004 with Tore Johansson, well known for his production on the debut album from Franz Ferdinand.

Also joining the band in the studio as mixing engineer was producer and multi-instrumentalist Dave Sardy, whose voluminous credits include work with Nine Inch Nails, Jet, and System of a Down. The resulting Oh No finds OK Go stepping forward with collection of hard driving melodic rockers, acoustic-driven ballads, and riff-filled three-minute anthems.

The quartet is in the midst of a month-long North American club tour with Leeds, England's high-flying Kaiser Chiefs. During the tour, fans have been able to check in with the band via the aforementioned series of self-produced OK Go podcasts. Hosted by long-standing OK Go comrade Mr. Mr. Jorge, Whom I Adore, Whom I Adore Just, the free podcast audio reports represent a groundbreaking approach to fan outreach by a major label band. The first three installments of the series - offering intimate and exceptionally chatty insights into the world of OK Go - are available at okgo.net.

Subsequent podcasts may be downloaded as mp3 files from the OK Go site or are available via a subscription service. Fans can begin by pasting http://okgo.net/okgo.xml into iPodder (or other podcast software). New podcasts will be automatically delivered to subscribers the moment they become available.

In addition to the Kaiser Chiefs, OK Go have shared stages with Fountains of Wayne, Phantom Planet, the Music, Elliot Smith, the Promise Ring, the Vines, Cranberries, They Might Be Giants, and the Violent Femmes. Performance highlights also include sets at England's famed Reading and Leeds rock festivals.

Mr. Mr. Jorge, Whom I Adore, Whom I Adore posted that.

  • I didn't get to listen to it...but I think it was just an airing of their podcast...*crosses fingers* here's hoping!
  • I listened to it--I got lucky and read the News update about 30 min before their segment aired here. It was mostly part of the podcast, but they played clips from the new album (DWYW, Oh No, and Good Idea (I think)) before and after. Good stuff.
