OK Go- Oh No!
Pop mastery continues on the sophomore offering.
August 25, 2005 - OK Go's debut album was a perfect dollop of hard-edged rock/pop, with teasing hooks and an almost snotty lead singer. Could you blame him? The band sounded that good. The jangly guitars, near-taunting sultry vocals, and razor-sharp lyrics ("got a body like a battle-axe") are blended to pure pop superiority on the debut.
With the new record Oh No!, OK Go returns to what made them great, but kicks the dial to 11 and delivers a more guitar-driven helping of pop wonderment. The opening track gets the party started with a track that clearly defines the bridge between old and new. The "nah nah" guitar melds brilliantly with Damian Kulash's slick vocals, and the "Invincible" chorus is classic OK Go harmonies, mixed with a meaty, catchy hook.
The rollicking vibe keeps flowing on "Do What You Want" and "Here it Goes Again," both of which are insanely infectious. In fact, the catchiness builds throughout, and will have all but the most stoic singing along by the third listen (if not sooner).
The record only mellows a couple times, with "Oh Lately It's So Quiet," which features the crooning falsetto chorus "Whose house are you haunting tonight?" and "No Sign of Life." Both songs maintain the groove on the downturn, keeping what is great about OK Go intact.
While the entire CD is solid, "It's a Disaster" and "A Million Ways," with it's "zero, zero, zero, zero" backing vocals are the most radio-ready, and should explode up the charts (in a fair world, these guys would already own the airwaves).
Like their first release, this album is solid from beginning to end, never lagging in its 42 minutes. If you are not a fan of the band's overall sound, there is probably little new to draw you to them, but people who discovered OK Go the first time around will be smiling when this one hits thee disc tray.
