Well known Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond was yesterday involved in a high speed car crash, while trying to break the land-speed record.
The 36 year old presenter from Cheltenham was rumoured to be travelling at near to 300mph when his car (F1-style jet propelled) veered off to the right. They were attempting to break the land speed record at an air field, near York.
One of the car's parachutes deployed, which would have helped slow the vehicle down, but when fire and ambulance crews arrived on the scene, it was found rolled over, and dug into the grass.
Hammond was cut free from the car, and was drifting in and out of consciousness when they air-lifted him by helicopter to Leeds General Infirmary.
Sources report that he is stable, but still suffering from serious head injuries.
