Irving Plaza Show-NYC-11/18/06

edited November -1 in OK Go
OK, so as I mentioned before, we scheduled a trip from Austin to NYC around this show, and it was so totally worth it!
This will be quick, as we're heading out the door for some much needed breakfast--last night was a late one!

Some highlights:
They were videoing the performance for something--Mike Clark mentioned what it was (I think) but I don't remember what he said. So there were cameramen climbing around everywhere (six cameras total) and one on the stage shooting the audience...so you can imagine they were putting on an especially spectacular show for that! I was on the third row, so I might be in the footage, but I looked like a total dork in my glasses smile.gif

After the show we waited around in the freezing cold, and my husband and I met Dan and his fiancee and actually had a nice little conversation with them about getting married, married life, etc. He is so nice.

I introduced myself as Ashley to Mr. Mr. Mr. Jorge, Whom I Adore, Whom I Adore, Whom I Adore, and he said "Oh Ashley Davila?" (my last name, duh) and I was like, cool, he recognized my name! He said he loved my covers and was sorry he hadn't had a chance to get them on-line. He promised to do that soon...

Damian came out and I got some video footage of me talking to him, but it is not very good (very dark)--plus my husband had the camera only on Damian so you hear my voice...but....then there's a little of me at the end. I told him I'd sent him two cover songs and he said "Oh that was you? I love them and know them well!" or something like that, which was nice of him to say!

Then we said goodbye to Mr. Mr. Mr. Jorge, Whom I Adore, Whom I Adore, Whom I Adore and he said "I promise, the covers will go up soon!" and the guys whisked off down the street to the after party or what not...along with all of the guys from Quit Your Day Job (who were pretty cool, too).

OK, that's all I can say for now...I didn't get ANY PICTURES of the actual show because they made us leave our pack at the front....but the girls next to me took a ton and said they'd email them to me.

  • i think we might have been standing right next to you during the concert. were these psycho girls behind you going kamikaze trying to annhilate you so they could get to the front too?

we stood out there by the door for a really long time after the show waiting for them too, but we had to catch the last train before 5:30 in the morning so we couldnt stay and wait until they came out. we were so bummed because we were SO CLOSE and we waited for nothing.

but it's kind of okay because... did anyone see the frisbee thing?

    that was us.

    sweet.
  • Very awesome about the filming!! I wish they'd put out a live DVD.
It would be cool if you were in the footage.
Was it really Milosh (Mike Clark)? Or Mike Kent?

That's really cool, your talking to Dan and his fiancee about marriage smile.gif They were together all the time in Chicago. I didn't actually talk to her, though. She seems cool, was totally cool about him going off to talk to fans; but they were surrounded by friends and family the whole time, too, so she always had someone to hang with when he was with fans anyway.

That is so cool about J orge knowing your name right away (woo!!) and you getting the apologies, and, of course, fantastic that Damian knows & likes them! That's so great!!!

So that's J orge and Milosh; don't suppose you got to meet Pete?

I agree about the Quit Your Day Job (or Dayjob? I've seen it both ways) guys. They're hilarious and really nice.

Will you post the video anywhere? I'd be interested. Can't wait to see the pictures. Glad you had a great night!!!!

Yes, that was my first time to talk to Dan, and as everyone has always said, he was extremely sweet.

I hope I didn't sound like I was bragging about my covers...PUH-LEEZE...what else could Damian or Mr. Mr. Mr. Jorge, Whom I Adore, Whom I Adore, Whom I Adore say when I mentioned them--they could have just been being polite! I just thought it was nice that they said anything.

I think that was the other Mike, NOT Milosh (though I think he was there, too). This was bald guy (or shaved head guy) in the orange jumpsuit who works sound.
And no, I didn't meet the mysterious Pete. He had told me if I could figure out who he was he'd hang with me...I'm fairly certain I know who he was but he was in the balcony and there was no way I could get to him without giving up my spot. He probably says that to all the fans who email him anyways smile.gif

If I can figure out the video stuff, I'll put it up...we are probably just going to edit all our video into a nice three minute vacation one and that's probably where it will wind up. Lee (hub) kept talking with Damian about this and that but held the camera down so as not to be rude or make it look like an interview, so there is a LOT of bad camera-work.

I'll post pictures IF I receive them from the other fans who took down my email address...I'm at their mercy!

PORIFERA--sorry I forgot to quote you...we were standing to the left facing the stage...so probably not right next to you, but cool frisbee! Overall the crowd was fairly good, I got the most squished during the acoustic set.
  • Ah, don't be so hard on yourself. They probably do really like them.

Cool, I'm a big Pete fan. I'm curious what the mysterious Pete looks like as well.
Yeah, the guy you described is Mike Kent, tour manager (? is that his title, anybody who knows?).

It's funny--during the acoustic set was when I got squished a bit too. I said, "Why is it that when they're over there I'm getting squished?" (when I wasn't before that) It was just weird, since you'd think people would be pushing toward them. Then I thought about it and maybe it was because room had to be made for them once they were over there (I don't know; I couldn't see how it was set up or when it was set up). Anyway, I felt bad after I said it because it came out much louder than I meant it to and a couple people looked at me. I didn't mean to sound like a bitchy jerk. And the squishing really wasn't bad; I've been in much worse! It was just an offhand comment ... I'm sure I sounded like an asshole complaining when I was in the front row for the show, after all. unsure.gif *reliving moment now, argh*

Sorry to ramble, lol. I hope the email buddies come through!
  • I want to meet J orge. I was talking to Tim about how if I was ever in New York, I'd run around and yell "J orge" and then Tim was just kind of like, "You should make sure there's a show and then he'll be there." He probably thought I was crazy.

Mike Kent used to be their tour manager, but now Bob is their tour manager. Mike is their sound/production manager or something like that.
  • Thanks.
Awesome card in your sig, btw! Love all the candles! hee hee He's arty biggrin.gif
  • haha. That was my birthday card from last year. It was my sweet sixteen, so he drew 16 candles.

Here's a picture of the rest of the card.

  • That's awesome--how did you get it?
  • They played a show 5 days before my birthday and my sister got them all to sign it while I wasn't around.
  • Very cool of her smile.gif
  • I was at this show last night... it was the best birthday party ever. I went with two of my best friends and we just danced for the entire time, it was a great crowd (other than some girls who kept pushing through everyone) and we had a great time with everyone there. I turned 17 as they started the last song. It was pretty damn perfect.

My friend did that for me last year! He went to a show like, four days before my birthday! I didn't get the card until almost Christmas, but it was amazing!

And then I did the same thing for Amanda when she got into St. Andrews. And she sent me a dollar bill signed by them. biggrin.gif

    I have amazing friends.
  • There are pics on Flickr of this show now.

After the show we waited around in the freezing cold,

how long did you end up waiting because we waited for like over an hour, but were forced to leave in order to make the last train. were you waiting on the side entrance where all the equipment was being brought out or were you by the bus?
  • if ya guys ever go to irving plaza again, my tip is to chill at the upstairs bar. everyone in VIP is always walking in and out of that area. before the show i saw Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Jorge, Whom I Adore, Whom I Adore, Whom I Adore, Whom I Adore, andy, and damian walk through there and i said hi to dan and his fiance before the show. plus, the balcony has an AMAZING view. my friend and i had a perfect view of the entire show from above and it was awesome.

also, watching from the balcony means you get a good view of the vip area....it was so cute to see damian rocking out completely to Quit Your Dayjob! he was really into it haha. and Tim with his hat and scarf was too cute for words. smile.gif

usually i try to get into VIP (and have been successful twice at OK Go shows...) but there were so many people this time, i wasnt even going to bother, i hung around for a few minutes to see if by some slight chance one would wander around, and left. i congratulate anyone who hung around outside after the show because MAN IT WAS COLD! haha

We waited about 40 minutes or so...they came out by the beautiful aqua tour bus....first we talked to Dan and his fiancee for a few minutes then Damian came out and was quite charming, he didn't seem to mind at all that there were people waiting for him and he took a lot of time with each person. Tim came out, too, but we were so frozen solid by then that we hit the subway.

Another thing I forgot to mention that was pretty darn adorable, and that was Damian in the balcony during Quit Your Dayjob's performance..he was totally rocking out and singing along...and then he ducked down so people wouldn't start staring at him and detract from QYDJ but of course we all did.

I just rewatched the short but sweet video we got of him signing autographs and him talking to me and my husband and all I can say is....sigh. smile.gif

DUH--sorry to post about the part about Damian rocking out in the balcony...as Cinnamon Lips had already done so smile.gif
