  • It's close to gold status.
  • Which is 500,000. Yes, I read 400,000 somewhere recently. If that's true, then Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oh_No) is way off.

    Can anyone verify?
  • it is said that google trends directly mirrors marketing because of the massive amounts of search data they collect, as well as linking news articles to trends in the searches.

for instance, point D was right after the HIGA video came out.

*actual sales are usually LESS dynamic than google trends reports.

i guess all this is fine and dandy but only slightly related to the original question tongue.gif

EDIT: sorry that wasnt helpful at all

No, it was kind of helpful. smile.gif

I am crossing my fingers for gold status, even though it probably means I will never get to see the band outside an arena again. (sigh) But they deserve all the success in the world.
  • Oh No is quite a ways away, actually, at least in the US. So go buy it, if you haven't. What's wikipedia say?

    Wikipedia says:

    QUOTE
Oh No is the second album by Chicago rock quartet OK Go. It was released 30 August 2005. The album was recorded in late 2004 with producer Tore Johansson in Malmö, Sweden.

As of September 12, 2006, the album has sold 77,716 units.

After the band's performance at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, their album moved up to #2 on the ITunes Music Store album sales charts (as of September 3, 2006). Their album sold 8,250 units in the following week, a 95% increase over the prior week, rocketing from #87 to #69 on the Billboard 200 album chart, the highest position ever achieved by any OK Go album to date.[1]

So clearly, Wikipedia is WAY out of date and needs to be updated. :-)
  • Add another one to whatever number you find, I just bought Oh No for a friend today.
  • What about the inclusion of Oh No through the DvD sales? Since it came with it, I wasn't sure if that would also add to the sales...
  • I've been keeping track of how many people I've gotten to buy the CD or DVD. I'm up to 6, which isn't a lot, but that's just in the last few weeks, and as they say at Tesco's in the UK, "every little helps." smile.gif I'm still working on it.
  • Saw this interesting blurb today at http://www.mp3.com/news/stories/8469.html

Capitol Music Group exec Ted Mico said Capitol band Ok Go has made more money on their videos than on track sales. The Chicago-based group has made a rep in recent years of making eye-popping music videos for songs like "Here It Goes Again"--best known as "the treadmill song"--and watching the videos spread virally.

Not really too surprising, but mildly insulting in light of the fact that all the awards they have been nominated for have been in the video category. That's kind of implying that the songs alone, do not merit a nomination.

Which is why, honestly, I think they need to lock themselves away and get back to recording. They need to start putting new material to prove, hey! we're not just standing on the success of this one song off this one record, we do other things, too.

And they've been touring this record for so long, I'm afraid of them just burning out after it.

    (This is all imho, btw.)

Which is why I am skeptical of the new video filled with the same colorful stunts as they did in HIGA. So not to stereotype themselves, they should really leave the pogo sticks and segways at home. They may lose some of the teenys they snagged with the treadmills, but the true fans will stay for the music.

It's interesting that he said that, since it's so very, very hard to believe. I'm not saying that what he's saying is factually incorrect... I'm just saying that what he's reporting is very, very hard to believe.

either way, they're not selling enough records to buy me a gold house, so go out and buy some more.
  • How would they have made much money on the videos, seeing as most of the time people are watching the videos for free online. I guess there's some licensing when it's shown on tv? But still, they can't have made that much on the videos...
  • I think it's because people are seeing the videos and buying the album because of them, rather than because of individual tracks themselves..? Something like that, I don't really get what he's saying either.
  • The Capitol suit is probably just talking through his hat and really doesn't know wtf he's talking about. You have to understand that corporate execs are generally quite adept at making stuff up as they go along. mad.gif

I agree completely. This is a really good band! They make energetic and fun pop/rock music and they've got charisma to spare. After watching a bunch of their videos, I'm dying to see their live show and yet also sad that I'll probably never have a chance to see them in a smaller venue. But even so, they've got an incredible window of opportunity right now to grab and hold on to a whole lot of new fans, but only if they come out with a new album soon, and one that has at least a couple of credible hit singles.

Endless touring's not going to give them that kind of boost, especially not as the supporting act. And paradoxically, even though it's been their route to a certain general awareness of who they are, more 'clever' (no, Damian doesn't like being called that) videos aren't going to do it either. They've had two awesomely innovative music videos. The second one topped the first one, which most people didn't really expect. But now, they will be expected to do it again. If that doesn't happen, their moment in the pop cultural spotlight will have passed.

Now I know that some of you, in your hearts of hearts, would like to keep OK Go to yourselves. Well, these guys aren't kids anymore; they need to make a decent living from what they do. Or think of it this way - Would you rather see them become more popular, or disband? Because that could be the choice. They're at a critical point in their career right now. They're so close to big time success that they can probably taste it.

Bottom line is that the best thing for OK Go to do right now would be to get back to the studio, and bring out a new album within 6 months.

    imnsho.

^^Agreed agreed agreed on every single account. That's exactly why all of this touring really just worries me.

Haha, so that's what it's been about all along? Okay, OK Garmy, new goal: Get Mr. Mr. Mr. Jorge, Whom I Adore, Whom I Adore, Whom I Adore a gold house.

    Oh, gold HOUSE! Crap ...
  • Did we atleast get enough money yet to buy Mr. Mr. Mr. Jorge, Whom I Adore, Whom I Adore, Whom I Adore a golden toilet seat, perhaps? Or the whole golden toilet? Or maybe, a golden set of tools for his fireplace?
