While talking on the phone with the boyfriend, the topic of Presidents' Day came up and how it's more or less a useless holiday (excluding the wonderful sales that go on at Macy's and Honda nationwide).
February 19th is set aside to honor thy US presidents. Why should we be so crude as to ignore it??
So, this year, (assuming my roommates agree), I am going to choose one president for which to create a shrine (read: incense, pictures, candles, et al).
HOWEVER, there is one stipulation: I want to honor an often forgotten president, one that maybe wasn't known for much but still stuck to his duty (or got stuck in a tub GO TAFT GO).
So Boardies, I need your help: WHO SHOULD I NEEDLESSLY IDOLIZE THIS FEBRUARY 19th???
(Also: I am terrible at history, so if one of the presidents on the list is actually influential, please ignore [also: I know that Taft was influential because of the whole Roosevelt/Taft thing that allowed Wilson to get elected, but still, the MAN GOT CAUGHT IN A TUB, so I thought it was alright].)
Thanks

I actually know nothing about american presidents.
has the greatest last name in history
Grover Cleveland is the only president who was elected to two terms that were non-consecutive, so that's pretty neat.
I though McKinley was influential? Anyway, he is was of the three or four presidents that have been assassinated, so that's pretty important.
Ulysses S. Grant, while having been a general in the Civil War, SUCKED at being president. It wasn't so much is fault; he was a nice guy. His cabinet was just corrupt as hell. And yet he got reelected and thought of running a third time. Poor guy.
I, however, am of the opinion that you should honour Millard Fillmore. I mean, come on. His wife called him Milly. Can you get better than that?
He was only in office for a month, then he died.
Hahaha, Taft . . . . he was a funny man. Because of the bath tub incident.
who the hell is chester arthur?
I vote for William Henry Harrison as well
he was cool
and dumb, cause he insisted on walking to his inaugural ceremony and giving his speech outside in the rain, and therefore came down with pneumonia, and died a month later.
plus, his grandson was also a President (Benjamin Harrison), which is pretty cool.
aren't you in Canada anyways? (hehe)
W.H.H He might just be the winner by default.
(Ahhh Katy thanks for correcting me. I'm horribly bad at remembering who did what. read: horrible. I'm a terrible American, which is why I am in Canada!!! Whoooo)
But really, I don't remember much after 1900. Anything after 1850 just isn't interesting anymore, and after 1900, forget it.
Van Buren was my first choice because he was known as the "little magician" and his biography on the White House website begins as such:
"Only about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, but trim and erect, Martin Van Buren dressed fastidiously."
Hehheh erect.
Agreed. Sorry Courtney, but JFK is one of the most overHYPED presidents in history (I mean, his stature in the eyes of the public back in the day is being compared to all the attention around Obama today. That's quite a comparison).
SO: Who would you choose?
1) W.H.Harrison
OR
2) Martin Van Buren?????
I'm totally making a t-shirt (with puffy ink!) to honor my president of choice... along with the shrine.
P.S. If you feel like honoring a "forgotten" prez as well, we could totally have a (Forgotten) Presidents Day 2007. We'd be the coolest kids ever.
Though the shirts wouldn't top my "My Beard is My Co-Pilot!" shirt. I still have to pull that one on my roommate. I'm quite excited.
AHHHAHHHH
Oh my god I'm so exicted to make a t-shirt. If only I could convince my friend with a silkscreen to help me make one....
I'm thinking a stencil of his profile on the front with like "Martin Van Buren: Honor thy Buren" on the back.
Forgotten Presidents Day 2007!
