OK Go VMA Performance vanishing from YouTube

I've noticed that many of the HIGA treadmill performances from the MTV VMAs are no longer available on YouTube. Here's why:

Viacom wants its content taken off YouTube

Viacom Inc.'s demand Friday that YouTube remove more than 100,000 clips from the popular online video site is more than brinksmanship at the bargaining table.

It's a battle of the brands.

The entertainment conglomerate's insistence that YouTube remove such coveted content as highlights from "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" and "The Colbert Report" signals that it believes these brands have enough cachet to attract an online audience, with or without YouTube. And if YouTube wants the clips, Viacom wants it to pay for them.

The move highlights the growing tension — and interdependence — between online video sites and traditional media companies. The latter dislike having their copyrighted material posted without permission, but they do like the extra promotion it brings. YouTube had about 29.6 million visitors in December, according to ComScore Media Metrix. And YouTube, owned by Google Inc., relies on the traffic that established entertainment properties bring to sell ads.

It's a fragile ecosystem, and Viacom — owner of Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV Networks, Black Entertainment Television and Paramount Pictures — may be disrupting it.

  • Ok go!

... Oh. Sorry. I thought we were shouting out album titles.

Hahah! I seriously laughed out loud.
  • I don't understand why Viacom has to look at youtube as the enemy. Honestly, it's good publicity to have these things come up on youtube. What, do they think people will stop buying cable tv cause they can watch it on youtube? This is ridiculous. Everything has to get to twisted in legality. In the long run it'll end up hurting Viacom more than it will youtube.
  • I know, plus don't they like making people happy?
  • Yeah, I started watching some shows cause I saw them on Youtube. These companies are staffed by idiots.
  • time for the super fans to step in and kick some ass
  • Looks like they found them all. The last two copies I had favorited are now gone, including the one from 'ihave7stars'. Accompanying interviews, too. Pretty short-sighted of Viacom, imho. sad.gif

Although I'm glad I downloaded the performance to my hard drive a while ago! tongue.gif
