Our obesity crisis has forced the ambulance service to introduce super-sized vehicles to squeeze in overweight patients.

The workload for these heavy-duty ambulances has more than doubled in the past three years.

And specially designed air ambulances are also soon to be introduced.

The ambulances, which cost $100,000 (Australian) more than a normal sized ambulance, carry a specially designed stretcher and wheelchair and are also equipped with a hydraulic tailgate to enable patients to be loaded into the ambulance.

The crisis has also forced an upgrade to air emergency services with new helicopters due to arrive in May which will have a greater load capabilities than the current fleet.

  • i kinda find that pretty cool... i mean everyone has a right to emergency help.

    ... but also slightly distubing
  • Yeah, I agree, but on the other hand you'd have to be pretty huge not to fit in a normal sized ambulance.
  • I think it's because, when they're taking up more space, the paramedics and family members can't really fit in the back with them.
