What a horrible tragedy. My heart goes out to the victims' families.

The thing that scares me the most is, how can we prevent something like this from happening again? Evacuating a college is like evacuating a little city. Email isn't constant. Phones are not effective.. what can we do?

  • has this story only just broken in america?

    It's awful, I know.
But the answer is really quite simple.
Ban guns. They're too easy to get a hold of in the US.
I know that "the right to bear arms" is in your constitution, but at what cost? Is that freedom worth the grief it causes?
If gun laws were as strict as they are here, I can guarantee that this wouldn't happen as often as it does.

[random insert - Having said that, I once had a gun pointed at me here. Really not a nice experience. Apparently it was a BB gun but at that close range it can still do a lot of damage. But that is really the most we usually get in the way of guncrime.]

Well, no, that wouldn't make any sense. I think everyone's really just been in shock and it's still a sensitive subject to bring up, so I guess nobody here was too eager to make a thread. I hope nobody here lost any friends or family members. sad.gif
  • Yeah, it's been all over the news for a while.

I don't know about banning guns simply because, as often as it's repeated, "then only the criminals will have guns" seems to be a pretty accurate description of what may happen. If there is a demand for guns, people will find a way. However, I do believe that there need to be far more RESTRICTIVE gun laws. Complete background checks, a holding period, references, whatever. The process of acquiring guns should not be this easy and it's obviously a danger to everyone. There need to be some serious gun laws enacted.

I think I'm still in shock that something like this could happen, that someone would willfully hurt so many other people. It's really beyond anything I can understand.

My condolences to the families and loved ones; this is something no one should have to go through.
  • I do accept your argument, but that hasn't been the case in England since our gun laws changed after a similar incident happened at Dunblane. It has never been repeated here.

Yes, my thought go out to those who've been affected; it's the most tragic thing to happen.
  • Since the murderer was South Korean, there has been a slightly noticeable change in racism against Asians... I dunno.. I hate it when people bring in race.

"Then only the criminals will have guns." sad.gif

I think background checks and stuff aren't very helpful. I mean, people can just breakdown any moment. People can walk around and pretend that they're perfectly normal when they have bombs strapped to their bodies. You can't really tell. This guy was young, too. There wasn't a lot of history to check up on.
  • I've been hearing a lot about his plays that he wrote for class and how his teacher had him sent to a school therapist and stuff, plus all of the crazy photos and videos he sent to NBC before the shooting. I mean, people knew he was fucked up. It's really disturbing that this is the result of nobody doing anything about it. sad.gif

Then I may just be overly cynical about gun deregulation. And if it worked over there, we should at least try it here.

I heard about that. It's completely ridiculous. I don't understand how people can target a whole race for an isolated incident.

he sent the video and stuff to nbc in between the first shooting, in the dorm, and the second, bigger one in the academic building. I do agree, though, that it seems amazing that they couldn't prevent it when they knew how messed up he was. And some people tried to help, which just makes it worse.

anyways, one of the victims was from the next town over from me, Saugus. Turns out my brother knew him slightly through a mutual friend. I mean, of all the people at Virginia Tech, it had to be the one person my brother knew who went there. And it's probably like that for all the victims... it was so completely random. Thousands of students at the college and those particular thirty had the bad luck to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
  • sorry for hear that..

my little sis is a student of VT. (technically she is my cousin though.)
    fortunately, she wasn't hurt..

    anyways,
i watched that horrible news on tv
and heared the murderer was s.korean, which totally freaked me out.

my cousin sis said there are a lot of hate crimes against koreans going on..

i really hope that people will be able to forgive and move on..
i wanna apologize to every single american, if i can..

i wouldn't say that forgive Cho..
but plz dont hate any korean just because we are korean same as Cho..

all koreans are very apologetic about that news, including me..

    sorry again..

Just because you happen to be South Korean doesn't mean you should have to apologize for the actions of one student.

It's just ridiculous that anyone would make you feel guilty that you share the same heritage. I wasn't forced to apologize for the actions at Columbine because the kids were white and I'm white.

You shouldn't have to feel guilty at all. It's not your fault and I can't understand how ANYONE could put the blame of one person's shooting on an entire ethnicity.

I'm sorry that you feel sorry. You shouldn't have to feel that way.
  • these sort of things really get me.
    they really make me sad.
i was looking at all the victims online profiles on myspace and such and the comments were so sad.
like some were the day of, and their families were begging for them to call and let them know they were ok.
    but they never called.
    its so sad.
i wish theres something we could do.
    shit.
theres a website with all their pages on it.
i think its something like www.mydeathspace.com

I agree. You, your heritage, his heritage, anybody's heritage had nothing to do with it. He was just 1 disturbed person and you had nothing to do with him. So don't feel sorry.
