Great review of Grand Rapids last night! 6/20/07

edited November -1 in OK Go
A good review for a change (lately, it seems)!! Such a good one I figured it could use special attention. And then this can be the Grand Rapids thread, I guess, if anyone has anything to add ...

Ready for the spotlight

The evening's biggest surprise was the performance of Chicago's OK Go, which hit the stage with a real bolt of energy after a somewhat flat half-hour set by opener Mae.

Tossing fluorescent tambourines into the audience like Frisbees, the band unleashed its wildly entertaining new wave-tinged pop/rock (with a British invasion flair) with real stage presence, a party attitude and energetic fervor on songs such as "Get Over It," "Here It Goes Again," "No Sign of Life" and "Invincible."

Clad in suits and led by singer-guitarist Damian Kulash, the band even trotted out a jaunty cover of Electric Light Orchestra's "Don't Bring Me Down" -- a real treat "for the elderly" in the audience, Kulash quipped.

Bassist Tim Nordwind, originally from Kalamazoo and a 1994 graduate of Loy Norrix High School, and guitarist Rusty Ross pitched in mightily on backing vocals, not to mention well-timed leaps throughout the 46-minute set.

Indeed, if any band seemed arena-ready Wednesday night, it was OK Go.

  • "Arena-ready". You don't say!!

    I love it!

What's more impressive is reviews like this (and great concert reports) after sooooo many tour dates. Really, I know some concerts are better than others, but it's impressive to be able to sustain the same kind of performance and make it almost transparent to first-timers that you've done it hundreds of times before, and have that "fresh" energy.
  • imagine my enormous disappointment to learn that they were back in MI when it was too late..

I was thinking the same thing after last week's shows, and also thinking about it in terms of the songs--these are really good songs. That kinda sounds like "Well, duh, of course we all like the songs," but no, I mean these are really good, solid, impressive, well written songs and they've really stood the test. I'm still sounding stupid here, I think ... But for the guys, and us, to have gotten this much mileage out of them ... Everything on Oh No is really, really good.
