Pink Martini

edited November -1 in General Discussion
Lately I've been deeply in love with Pink Martini. They hail from Portland, Oregon, and describe themselves as a "little big band", complete with brass section, violins, and sexy, Rita Hayworth-ish lead singer. Their music draws from pre-rock & roll pop music, both in their originals and in their covers (everything from "Amado Mio" to music from Japanese big bands), but they have a great spirit and love of what they do that makes their music irresistable...at least to me. If you like good music, you should give them a spin. If you're into Rufus Wainwright, you might really like them! Their new album, Hey Eugene, is their best, though I also love their first album, Sympathique. (Hang On Little Tomato is good, but not as good as the first and third records.)

(As a side note, I really wish they'd tour with OK Go. Both bands hit the happy part of my brain in a big way, both have a public-broadcasting imprimatur -- PM filmed one of their concerts for broadcast during the telethon season, and OK Go toured with the first This American Life tour -- both have a pretty, charismatic lead singer [Damian, meet China: http://mrc.memmingen-live.de/blog/images/pink_martini.jpg] and a goofball second-in-command, and...yeah. Besides, I'd love to hear the boys back China up on her song "Hey Eugene", and then have them come out and do a synchronized dance to one of PM's songs.)

  • I haven't had a chance to listen to Pink Martini yet (since I'm at work. Though, since you seem to have quite an awesome taste in music, I plan on checking them out), so I'm not quite sure of their sound. But if you like the "big band" sound, do you listen to Mucca Pazza or Squirrel Nut Zippers at all?
  • Aw man, I wish this had been posted sooner. I'm looking at their website now and they were here in NYC last week. Oh well.

I'll take a listen to their stuff when I get home. I'm a former big band/swing nerd so I'm up for anything with a retro sound. Thank you for posting about them!
  • I heard "Sympathique" in a bistro in NYC one time, and I remembered the lyrics but had no idea what song it was, and had resigned myself to never finding out.

And then my friends started singing it between classes one day a few months ago. :S
