Of Montreal

I have been listening to Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? for the past I don't know how long.

One of the first time my ears were graced with the bubbly synth indie pop that is Of Montreal was in my friend's car, a red manual where I can sit in the passenger seat, surrounded by knick knacks and papers and her artwork and adventure. I had heard of them before, I even had a couple of songs from Satanic Panic in the Attic and The Bird Who Continued to Eat the Rabbit's Flower tucked away into the bowels of my then new iPod. But that hardly counts.

She flicked through her iPod, eyes darting to the road and back to the little screen, unlit as to "conserve energy."

"You're going to love this song. It's hilarious."
"Yeah?"
"You're gonna!"

She put on a song that I now know is called, "Tim, I wish you were born a girl." The name implies everything. I sat there, listening, and laughing, thrilled by the bubbly pop that.

As time went on, I fell more in love. It's a sort of pop that's a little more grown-up, less cloudy, but just as thrilling. Fauna's lyrics are noticeably a little darker, which make them all the more powerful where coupled with light sounding instrumentals and Kevin Barnes' occasional falsetto. It's indie pop at its finest. What more could you expect from an offshoot of the former Elephant 6 record label? (Elephant 6 also spawned Apples in Stereo, Neutral Milk Hotel, Beulah, Elf Power, and others.)

  • yes Of Montreal is mighty awesome!!!

i started listening to them when my brother filled up my ipod with a bunch of really good music he thought I would enjoy. And this was one of the artists. And they're great!
  • I need a lover with soul power... and you ain't got no soul power.

Thier songs make me smile and giggle. And whenever thier outback commerical comes on it makes me love them even more.

    Kevin Barnes is adorable.

  • They have an outback commercial? I am not sure how I feel about that (it doesn't make me think less of them, but less of Outback). Seriously, is it so hard for companies to come up wiith jingles rather than seem "cool and hip!" by using indie pop? Maybe I'm just a douche who needs something better to complain about biggrin.gif

But I do agree with you; I love Kevin Barnes. Apparently they put on an a-fucking-mazing show.

Emily, do you think it's safe to guess that you'll be different from the re-eh-eh-eh-est?

Hey Porifera, that's a pretty kick-ass thing for your brother to do! (I seem to remember back in another thread you saying that he put some Go! Team on too.)

Edit: hahaha the video for Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse is ridiculous and fantastic. it's the bear costume that makes it.

ya well my brother is pretty kick ass hahaha Ya my brother lives in Brooklyn with like a lot of his old friends in the vicinity and they have such a great taste in music! And they have like all this crazy shit that I've never heard of, but that I love! So I sent him down with my Ipod one time and he put all this awesome stuff on it! He is soo cool!
  • hey so are they from montreal?

    haha jk i dunno

they are cool though, thats for sure.
i only have the hissing fauna album.. shall i get the others?
  • They are, in fact, not from Montreal. (I admit, I had no idea either until recently)

In the outback commercial, they CHANGED THE LYRICS from "Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games," which was very frustrating.

They, not too long ago, performed an indie sort of karaoke at Studio B in Brooklyn hosted by Michael Showalter where they played back-up to various people who came onstage. Apparently it was amazing.
  • They are pretty excellent live. And they're from Athens, Georgia.

  • They changed the lyrics but just think of it as a reprise!

    hahahaha. i find it cute.
  • I adore Of Montreal. They are awesome live performers. When I saw them, some lame audience members thought it would be hilarious to hold up a giant banner for Outback and it really pissed Kevin Barnes off. He said he almost didn't want to finish the show, and if he had walked I would have throttled those folks. But alas, they did the whole show and it rocked. I can't wait to see them live again. The costumes are amazing. And I got an email from Kevin once early on and it made me ALMOST as happy as the one I got from Damian. ALMOST, people, I said ALMOST.
  • They're playing a show at my school on Saturday November 10th! Hooraya!
Its not free, but whatever I still wanna go!
  • Go go go go do it do it.

Apparently they put on a pretty kick-ass live show.

I'm so jealous. Why does UCSD get all the good concerts? I think I'm going to die of boredom in Santa Cruz. Of Montreal is playing THREE days in San Francisco, but I'll be stuck at school. I just need to find someone willing to drive me.
  • Ohhh man it was an excellent show!!!

Just thought you all ought to know..

Oh, if you ever have an opportunity to see them, please do. Seriously, it's an incredible show!!
