I randomly found their album in my MSN Shared folder last week (I believe someone from the OK Go forums sent it to me last year and I completely forgot about it 'til I decided to clean out my computer the other day) and had a listen and then couldn't stop giggling for a day when I recognised Chelsea Dagger from a Woolworths ad.
lol I have no idea, I don't actually remember the ad. I just remember hearing it the first time and going, "OH MY GOD THAT SONG IS FROM AN AD! I WONDER WHICH ONE!" and when I wikied it, it said Woolies ("Safeway" for the dicks in Victoria). For some reason in my head I was thinking Target but I was probably just confusing it with that song from the Kmart ad "ladadi-dah ladadi-dah ladadi-dah ladadi-dah".
I've been listening to The Fratellis while doing hw/dancing for 2 days now. I just saw their vids and I have to say, really, really, really gross- it's total exploitation of women's bodies. It's disappointing b/c given how awesome the music is, you'd think they'd have a more original idea for a video than something that's been used, umm, many, many times in the history of advertising: half-naked women. Every mediocre pop star sticks a half naked women in the vid- it requires zero originality and zero creativity.
I think it sounds like I'm hating on them, but the truth is I can't get enough of their music- indescribably good songs...so it was kind of a shock to see their videos. I guess I've been spoiled by the brilliance of GOI, AMW, HIGA and DWYW (all 3 versions)...videos that make you go, "that is beyond cool."
well... I see what you mean, but I also think that there's still a differnece between those girls in the Fratellis vid and those of Hip Hop vids like 50 cents... I mean, they ARE not really well dressed, but ...I dunno, maybe I just try to make things up because I like the Fratellis so much?!
BTW I guess one IS a bit spoiled by everything OK Go did...
I LOVE this band so much. I totally don't care anymore about misogynistic aspects of their videos. They're just SO GOOD. Yesterday, I listened to For the Girl on repeat for 3 hours while doing hw. I've got 2 exams this week to study for, so yeah, The Fratellis will be on repeat again. They make me wish I could go to a pub and just dance on the tables and counters.
I have a question tho, and I know there are some Fratelli experts here. In Gutterati, who says "I hate your fookin lyrics"? I googled it and one place said it was someone in the audience and another place said it was Jon- I can't trust that second place tho b/c it also said they were brothers which is wrong. At least, I think that's wrong. They changed their last names, right? I love Scottish accents!!!
right, i think only barry (if that is his name) is the one actually having Fratelli as his name, the others changed it. (but i am not sure, really not...) And the gutterati? hm, i think it is:
QUOTE
"I hate your [expletive] lyrics!" somebody in the trio shouts at the end of "The Gutterati?," in which slurring singer Jon Fratelli spews images of Cinderella, old queens, TV-watching and feet-picking so fast it's almost impossible to keep up. Not even the band knows what it means! (Although it's funny and probably about sex: "Well I may not have a big boy's pistol, but I'll help you any way I can.")
maybe that's just what you found, it is really hard to tell...
reeeally? wow, so 2 changed their name to match his? I always thought they all did just cuz I thought "fratelli" was a play on "fraternity" somehow, as in they're such good friends that they're brothers- but I totally made that up.
Who does it sound like to you? And, actually, you can hear this person's voice in Cigarello- or maybe Flathead, I forget which. But at the end of the song. And there's clapping and laughing and stuff- so I'm wondering, did they record a performance? Or is this their own clapping and shouting during a recording session?
ha, well... they seem to be the kind of persons to clap and shout at the end of recording, so i think it's one of them... I just don't know who... Maybe Mince?
(oh and i really am not sure about this whole name issue *wikipedia* ok- now i am sure and i was right YAY, but the name Fratelli is actually the maiden name of Barrys mother and he took it and the other two adopted it)
Hey it says here that there will be a new album in april!!!
Oh, and i have seen them perform celsea dagger (i think...) at rock im park, a huge german festival and this video is on youtube and there Jon says something like "I really wish i'd never written this song" ... as part of the song and i dunno, it made me think...that it must be pretty hard to always play these songs even if one's not in the right mood...
That's so cool! They were the ones clapping! I'd really love to see them live! You're so lucky! And Barry's mother! That's so sweet! Thank you for the explanation! haha, too many ! marks
ooooooooh, I feel so relieved. I had forgiven them against my principles for all the girls in their videos, but here! http://www.imf.com/link_player.html?video_...te%20llis%20imf They explained it! They said they fill their videos with girls b/c videos stress them out since vids aren't their thing and they're not good at it, so girls are the only thing they can think of to fill it. Well, I think that's a really admirable thing to say. Although I suppose I betray everything I yell about by saying that. But the fratellis are so incredibly good, you can't help but fall in love with them.
Me too!!!! Whenever I go, I'll stop in Boston and pick you up and we'll head off to Glasgow, okay?
Anyway, I saw The Fratellis on my birthday (it was some other girl's birthday too and they said happy birthday to her ), but I was kind of far back and behind a million tall guys, so it wasn't the best show. I want them to come back and I want to be in the front!!
(oh and i really am not sure about this whole name issue *wikipedia* ok- now i am sure and i was right YAY, but the name Fratelli is actually the maiden name of Barrys mother and he took it and the other two adopted it)
Apparently there are a lot of Italians, or Italian descendants, living in Scotland (and loads of feuds between different families who own ice cream shops, it puts me in mind of Bugsy Malone, LOL). Paolo Nutini's Italian/Scottish, and I reckon Barry's mother must be Italian too - Fratelli sounds Italian to me. Makes sense, no?
And Sally - I know what you mean. The first version of the Don't Ask Me video would be really disappointing for me because of the half-naked, dancing girls... if it didn't have some absolutely beautiful shots of Damian gazing up at the camera through his hair
oh...i wanna go to scotland, too!!!! Oh, maybe i will, i have a six week long vacation in february and fligths to Scotland are really cheap...hm.
We should all go to Scotland! Except flights to Scotland for me are definitely not cheap. If you do go, can you find a Scottish boy and mail him to me?
haha, sure, i'll do that. What do you want, a Fratelli or a Paolo? maybe all four of them... I dunno if i really want to go, i'd have to go alone or persuade someone and i don't know who.... hm hm...
