the title says it all doesn't it...

my friend told me about them a couple of months ago and i have since become obsessed... anyone here like them?? [they'd have to be someone.... what's not to like about them?... (don't answer that... i don't want a list...)]

  • I love their cover artwork ... unfortunately don't have loads of songs, but those I got are great
  • the shins are so adorable. they have these great videos and amazing songs that make you feel all sticky and warm. Thier songs also always break my heart too...

i dont know why... i get choked up and my stomach feels weird every time i hear caring is creepy
  • aw.... i just thought that I should listen to caring is creepy, to see how it sounds (as I can't remember) and then realized that my computer with all my music...died today.... well, not died, someone is repairing it right now, but it feels wrong,... sad.gif
But caring is creepy will be the first song I'll listen to, when I get my computer back
  • I think they were one of the first "indie" bands I listened to.

Back in the day (a.k.a. high school), during my (rather expansive) Me First and the Gimme Gimmes phase, I started to get involved in theatre.

Anyway, long story short, a couple of my friends from theatre (both who could make me laugh until I cried on a regular basis) loved the Shins. They would play it backstage and sing along. Soon, I started to learn the lyrics and sing along (we were always proud when we actually knew what they were saying ("'and though the saints divine in ancient feeding lines. Their sentiment is just as hard to pluck from the vines'.... What the hell does that even mean?").
I liked Wincing the Night Away, but Chutes Too Narrow will always remind me of theatre and summer and high school. It's the CD that will make me remember my Mom singing along to Fighting in a Sack and putting it on repeat because she, in her words, "just LOOOVES this song!" (my mom is pretty awesome). It will remind me of sitting in the hallway of my school, waiting to go on for Antigone (we were a part of the chorus, YEAH), talking about how Zach Braff was SUUUCH A DREAMBOAT and quoting Scrubs until we keeled over.

You were in Antigone? ... I remember reading the book at school and finding it rather boring (may be because of the teacher, I dunno)

anyway, listened to Caring is creepy and i really really really like it.
  • How ironic!
I've had all the Shins albums on my comp for a long time, but I never gave them a proper listen until a few days ago, and now I'm like why didn't I listen to this before! They're lovely!

hehe i agree with the "lovely" word. Only words like "adorable", "darlings", "sweet" come to mind when i listen to them.

    They ARE lovely!

  • Haha, yes they're adorable and fun and lovely!

I'm in love with "Sea Legs" from their latest album, but I don't really know what its about..
  • you really seem to know loads of their songs... I feel left out and maybe should start listen to more than just the three or four I got (now... really even those are gone, my whole music data is gone... no shins, no OKGo, no Paolo, no Maximo Park, nobody.... But I got the weekend to put it all back up from my Cds, so not all hope's lost yet

Hah yeah, the Jean Anouilh version, not the Socrates version. It was my first excusion into theatre and, despite the depressing story, was still a blast.
  • I've had a love-hate relationship with The Shins (not really). I bought Chutes Too Narrow when it came out and never liked it... James Mercer's voice just annoyed me to death. And they were the big "oh, look at me I listen to such indie music" band at my school, so I guess I didn't really want to like them laugh.gif

But then I got the Garden State OST and fell in love with "Caring Is Creepy" and "New Slang." I never ended up getting Oh, Inverted World, though... but what I've heard of Wincing The Night Away, I really like. Time to give them a second chance, I suppose.
  • everyone deserves a second chance, I am about to give the killres a second chance, I can't remember when I last listened to them and I have both CDs and... one should not stop listen to music just because of moustaches....
