Upon arriving to university, I brought with me my haul of indie music: The White Stripes, Gogol Bordello, Yann Tiersen, Arcade Fire, the whole kit and caboodle.
It was then that one of my roommates began to introduce me to hip hop music (I don't think it was intentional, but she still passed it on to me while playing it while cleaning dishes and answering my calls from the other room of, "who is this? It's good!"). It started with the Roots.
My boyfriend, up to visit one weekend, saw "Do You Want More?!!!??!" on my desk and, upon hearing who had given it me me, declared my roommate had good taste (which is true) and has since passed on a number of other hip hop/DJ albums to me (Deltron 3030, DJ Kid Koala [a McGill alumn!], the Beaste Boys, etc.). Still, the Roots remain my favorite of the group, despite my still rather lacking knowledge of hip hop music in general.
Simply, it's just plain ol' good music.
