Quitting School to Play Video Games

edited November -1 in General Discussion
"Only a handful are able to make a living from professional gaming, but the number is growing. Peebles, who plays under the alias "Dreminem," hopes to become one of them. Although his parents didn't want him to ditch school, in the words of the article he "bugged them until they let him quit."

"We couldn't take the complaining anymore," Peebles' mother Hunter told the News & Observer. "He always told me he thought school was a waste of time." Blake hopes to win a place at the 2008 World Cyber Games Grand Final, which takes place in Germany in November, where -- if successful -- he'd take on gamers from over 70 countries."

I am biased here. But what sort of parent lets you quit school because you want to be a professional gamer and they couldn't stand your complaining anymore?

And there is a job out there called "Professional Gamer"? I don't want to offend gamers on this board. I just wanted your thoughts on quitting school to become a professional gamer. And your thoughts on the article.

  • Yeah, there are people in this world who are paid to play video games. It's true. But honestly, it's like they let him quit school to try his hand at becoming a rock star. And wait, all he plays is Guitar Hero? Are you KIDDING me? He's not even quitting to play Halo or GTA or something more traditional? That. Is. Stupid. Because as awesome as that game is he's SEVERELY limiting his skill set in his chosen field of professional gamer. Dork.

Look, I'm all for following your dreams and whatever, obviously, but I don't think it's smart to quit school for any reason. You've GOT to have something to fall back on if it doesn't work out.
  • does anyone know anyone REALLY good at guitar hero?

if you said yes, then you know they are a DICK

    no one likes that guy

    cause hes a DICK
  • i dont approve. if my son asked me if he could quit to play guitar hero all day id kick his ass. if i said that to my dad hed still be kicking my ass for another 10 years
  • oh man he's gonna be sorry one day, when he's waiting tables at 40. yikes.
