I'm a little late to this topic. Hope it's not too late to add my two cents worth. Got here lookin for the lyrics to TGSIEH, an it seems nobody knows for sure. So here's what I think I'm hearing...
An' we saw Capt'n Power singing hour after hour of a future that would never be
An' I sank to the bottom for a summer and an autumn trying to figure out that this was me
An' she pimped me down to the lady parade men waitin' for the soul to spare
When it quieted down I heard the sound And that's the greatest song I ever heard
Yeah, that's the greatest song I ever heard
Now I saw Bob Dylan gone electric villain Pete Seeger with his ax in a cloud
Maggie and The Bomb never meant no harm but my heart started beatin' too loud
An' I caught a glimpse of a feeling of high once that let strip away the pain
An' that just purged the next night's urge 'cause that's the greatest song I've ever heard I ever heard Yeah
Oh that's the greatest song I ever heard
Yeah, that's the greatest song I ever heard
That's the greatest song I ever heard
We solved all our problems with bigger problems with bigger problems
ChristelAdina already posted a guess as to the lyrics for this song on page 2 of this thread and we've all agreed that these are probably correct. I'll quote them for you below. You're not that far off from her, but she's getting some references that you've missed (ie Cat Power, the musician).

The Greatest Song I Ever Heard
And we saw Cat Power
singing hour after hour
of a future that would never be
And I sank to the bottom
for a summer and an autumn
trying to figure out which was me
And she pinned me down
to [Our Lady Parade?]* groove
waiting for the soul to stray [stay?]
When it quieted down
I heard the sound
And that's the greatest song I ever heard
Yeah, that's the greatest song I ever heard
Now I saw Bob Dylan gone electric
Feeling Pete Seeger
with his axe in the crowd
Maggie and the farm
never meant no harm
but my heart started beating too loud
And I caught a glimpse
of a feeling I had once
But let it slip away in the [pain?]^
And now I'm just playing
Never stop playing
'Cause that's the greatest song I ever heard
I ever heard, yeah
That's the greatest song I ever heard
Yeah, that's the greatest song I ever heard
That's the greatest song I ever heard
We solved all our problems
with bigger problems
with bigger problems
And that's the greatest song I ever heard
*As in the Trinity Parade
^ "in the Pink", perhaps?
I'm really kind of disappointed that there's no Nate Dogg reference (I originally thought I heard one on the studio version and I found it kind of awesome).
Keep in mind this is coming from your Queen of Mondegreens. Plus I read WAY too much into lyrics sometimes, which explains how my first attempt at this on Tumblr has lines relating to Kat Bjelland and Jason Mraz...

The original "White Knuckles" are something else, though. Those verses change the whole tone…
Thanks to autumnraina for writing down & following up w/questions on the demo WK lyrics & Becky for posting the before & after vids.
