A quick question. Why is "shooting the moon" song not available as an indivuidual song on itunes, i really like the song but i don't want to buy the whole album.
Blame Stephenie Meyer (or whomever is running the Twilight decisions). All the songs on the New Moon soundtrack are exclusive to the album, so if the powers-that-be of Twilight don't want to sell the songs individually, they won't. I think it was because people were able to download individual songs from the Twilight soundtrack and it kept sales of the whole album lower than they would be otherwise (just a hypothesis, of course). My suggestion is to find someone who has the CD and rip it from them.
I answered this question last night, but my post disappeared. I did my math and showed/saved my work...hmmm.
Anyway, yeah Rachel is right. It's about the liscencing to iTunes and making it exclusive. I suggest doing what I did if it's the principal of it and not just money, which is buy a physical copy resale from a local indie music store. Mine was new, but sold as used because they got so many in (kids getting multiple copies as gifts or having the digital and not wanting the disc). The bonus is that OK Go isn't the only good song on the soundtrack, so I was paying for 2 or so songs and got a few more I actually like. Of course, that might not be any less expensive than buying the whole thing on iTunes, so if money is the issue, you may have to wait to see if the song turns up as a B-side or alternate recording at some point.
Heh, normally I'm all about principle and I buy EVERYTHING. I'm even loathe to loan friends CDs sometimes because I want them to buy the album. But with anything Twilight related, they're making money hand over foot, and I thought the rest of the CD (which I did buy the day it was released) was downright unlistenable. I only ripped Shooting the Moon and the Hurricane Bells track.

I used the wrong principle. It truly is a bad day for my brain. My mysterious vanishing post had it right.
I agree with Twilight making so much money that some people not buying it for OK Go isn't going to matter. But there's a tiny part of me that thinks, in theory, that then OK Go really is getting nothing from the deal, and that's not acceptable.
And yes, I am aware of the hypocrisy of that thought, given that I bought my copy second-hand. But, as I said, bad brain day (I had to retype hypocrisy 3 times to spell it right!).
I didn't want to support the whole Twilight franchise but I also feel bad when I get music in a way that doesn't support the band (particularly when it's a band I love) so I downloaded it illegally and bought a bunch of OK Go merch to make up for it.

That's probably the best way to do it, honestly. Well, less so now that they're on their own, but STM probs still belongs to EMI and you know they're getting pennies to the dollar on it, if that. Merch goes straight to them.

And who knew, the album was actually really nice to listen to. I still listen to it.
PS. My OkGo thirst was quenched plus some. A whole lotta some.
The music on the New Moon and Eclipse soundtracks is really, really good. What I'm opposed to, however, is that the artists probably aren't getting their fair cut of the profit. Especially the boys. If they had made that deal through Paracadute!!! rather than EMI, it might have been different.
While the boys may be getting little if anything from the sale of the soundtrack, it's an excellent way to get their music to new, potential fans. If they like Shooting the Moon, they'll probably like OTBCOTS, which hopefully translates to album sales.

THIS is absolutely true. If it weren't for Shooting the Moon being on the soundtrack I probably would not be on this message board right now. And I think I've bought my fair share of OK Go albums, merchandise, and concert tickets since then.
