2010 Accolades for OK Go

edited November -1 in OK Go

I thought it would be a good idea to have one place where we posted all of the blogs/websites/wherever that list OK Go in their "Top X Singles of 2010" lists.  Obviously Fuse has the Rube Goldberg This Too Shall Pass Video at #2, but PopMatters posted their "60 Best Singles of 2010" list today and look who's at 59!  http://www.popmatters.com/pm/feature/134407-the-60-best-singles-of-2010/

(Wonderfully written article, btw...)

  • Such a gd idea Rachel :) i keep coming across all these random lists which they show up on but never know how many ppl actually know abt them o.O

So here's a recent list of Top 25 Music Videos of 2010 compiled by Paste Magazine, White Knuckles clocks in at #6, and This Too Shall Pass tops the list! :D

    http://www.pastemagazine.com/blogs/lists/2010/12/the-25-best-music-videos-of-2010.html?p=5

  • So I don't have any of those articles, but I'd like to ask if I'm the only one that's disappointed that the video for end love didn't get more attention?  that's a freaking fantastic video.. but nobody recognizes it.  D:

Thanks for the compliment, Rachel. Though I'd have described it as "weirdly edited" rather than wonderfully written. Some very strange things happened at the end of the piece between my first draft (that most of that is), my much better, edited version (which is not present) and the edited-by-a-colleague-who-has-no-clue-about-the-rhythm-of-words-and-an-unhealthy-attachment-to-semi-colons. I'm tempted to share the better version, because some of you may recognize the difference.

PM will probably have more on OK Go in the coming weeks (I know the band grabbed 4 of the 5 top videos from more writers than just myself. It'll be interesting to see how that figures into the overall tally given the prevailing attitudes of the magazine...). That's the only one written by me for PM, though. However, I still haven't heard which--if any--of my other year end pieces/Top 10 lists will be in other publications or on other sites. So keep your eyes peeled.

Inicidentally, Rachel. Happy Happy made my Top Albums. Of course, it wouldn't end up as such on PopMatters because the top 50 albums--and the 60 singles/songs, as well as the other categories--are culled from thousands of contributors worldwide. Frankly, I'm surprised White Knuckles made it into the running at all, considering how many people had to have it in their list for that to happen. But rest assured, in MY personal best of list, you made number 9 (you edged Amanda Palmer out of the top 10, actually)! Wink

It may yet get recognition. Not all year end lists come out before the year's end.

Edited to say: Speaking of... I clicked over to my email and just this minute received my Pazz & Jop Ballot (That's the year-end best-of for the Village Voice). Totally different criteria and scoring/rating systems than PM or Paste, but still more opportunities to tell the world that my picks for 2010 include OK Go.

That's probably one of the best compliments I've ever gotten.  I feel like the best new artist no one's ever heard of right now. Take that, Bieber!  :-D   Thanks, Christel!

Also, TotalGeek42, I agree with you on the End Love video.  I actually like End Love more as a song than I originally did because I love that video so much.  Orange Bill ftw!

  • I know!  Like that video was just fantastically put together and planned out.. but I've seen an article agree with me on that -once-.  xP
  • While the article does credit OK Go with revolutionizing the art form of the music video, they still only got second place.

OH I am stupid and I didn't include the link.  Here:

And then these two are smaller blogs, but hey a mention is a mention.

http://webpenblog.wordpress.com/2010/12/08/favorite-albums-of-2010-14-12/#comment-14120 ; (this one mentions Kate Miller-Heidke too, and therefore I love this person)

  • At least SOMEONE at MTV appreciates OK Go (2 VJs!) :

There's also a review on Of the Blue Colour of the Sky by a smaller group of reviewers methinks, but because it rated the album at 9/10 i thought it was pretty much an accolade there ;)

  • The Youtube crew have put together their Top 10 Videos of 2010: OK Go made it to 7th most viewed with This Too Shall Pass, not including major label artist vids :) - http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2010/12/double-rainbows-annoying-oranges-and.html

JBiebs got 4 outta Top 10 in the list of major label artist vids o.O what is this world coming to?!?!?  I would totally choose Greyson Chance over JBiebs any day :P x

I'm sure that the reason behind that is just sheer number of views.  And we all know that BieberFever is alive and well.

So here's a list of the top 300 songs of 2010 according to Radio.  TTSP came in at 278.  Radio usually hates our boys, so the fact that they're on this list at all is just plain superb.

  • Do awards count as accolades? The UK Music Video Awards 2010 may have been discussed on another thread/topic, but I did a search and couldn't find them. Could be worth a mention here.

At the the UK Music Video Awards 2010, the TTSP Rube Goldberg video won "Best Rock Video" and took the "Video of the Year." The site is here.

Two big and well-deserved accolades for TTSP!

  • hello all :)

Sooo. OK Go was nowhere to be seen on their mainstream top 20 albums list this year (surprise surprise) BUUUTTTT…this VJ here compiled another list of top 10 albums which were left outta the mainstream list and promptly put OK Go at the top BECAUSE THEY DESERVE IT.  rock on ;)

  • That Kyle Anderson is a gentleman and a scholar, clearly.  He gets it.

So, here are a few more tops of 2010 lists that OK Go appears in:

    http://dontfearthemainstream.blogspot.com/2010/12/my-top-10-albums-of-2010.html

http://speakimge.wordpress.com/2010/12/20/simge’s-best-of-2010-lists-artists-pick-em’-part-4/ (although the fact checking in this one is pretty lacking)

http://www.spin.com/articles/20-best-music-videos-2010 ;(This one is a fairly big deal, even if they are idiots and have only ONE video and push it all the way down to 11)  (also, just THINKING about that choir cover of "Creep" for The Social Network trailer at #5 gives me the chills and makes me tear up a bit)

    But Kanye West wasn't better.

    >>

    Jus' sayin'.

  • Some genius on Twitter, I think it was Casey from the Future of Music Coalition, said something like: "It's like the world feels the need to congratulate Kanye for going potty all by himself. You made an album! Gold Star!"
  • Rich Copley of the Lexington Herald-Leader places OK Go at #2 of his picks for the best music of 2010.

I like that he's telling people to purchase the ENE if they haven't gotten the album yet. Though I never would have imagined someone describing Last Leaf as "psychological nudity".

And yet it's kind of true..

When I reviewed it (didn't publish), I actualy referred to it as "emotional nudity" at one point.  It's because I was talking about the remote isolation of BTEWR being akin to watching life and love begin, unfold and decay from a distance as if armoured or protected, and somehow unconnected to it. Whereas Last Leaf is about as close and connected as one can get to the same process; with all the protective armour stripped away and feelings laid bare, rooted in the flesh rather than floating in space.

Anyway, I like Copley's blurb, and his other choices are pretty good, too

As much as I'd like to contribute to this thread, I cannot remember a link that I've read about this. But, may I interject, since Becky brought the subject of ENE and Last Leaf: DESOLATION CANYON. Man, that'd be the best place ever to record a song like that, FOR REALZ.

"It was getting dark, I didn't sound sad - I sounded scared, cuz, I basically was."

sorry, I just got here and i'm already going off topic but I just couldn't resist.
