what's with the self proclaimed "assholes" label?

edited November -1 in OK Go
I find that so hysterical! I've known some real jerks, they usually are unaware that they are one.

Damian is beginning to sound like Lady MacBeth, he doth protest too much methinks!

Am I the only one who finds this to be true?

Now, Morrissey...he's an a**hole. I saw him in London in 1992...unbelievable the ego on that guy! He even insulted the audience.

  • are you talking about this?
  • Haha, well, his own mother confronted him about it..
  • for a second... me being stupid... i thought you meant that damians starting his own music label called "assholes"

hahahha now that would have been something.

I don't think Damians an asshole. he has always been sweet to me.
  • Damian has said onstage(twice now that I've seen them) "we're all assholes" I've read quotes with the same sentiment expressed.

I don't believe it...their actions show they are not. If you have to inform people you are an asshole, then clearly you are not.

    It's just something I don't understand I guess.
  • I can see Damian being on the slightly assholioish side, just because he's always been good looking, smart and must have alot of confidence to do all the stuff he did in college and beyond-and if you read the article where he talks about why you don't want to date him(cause he's a rockstar) then maybe there is some truth to that. I think its funny-but I'm evil.
  • I agree w/ evilgenius. You have to have confidence and do certain things at the time that may seem cocky or asshole-esque.

Overall, however, there is a difference between being an asshole at the moment and being an asshole you're whole life. There are times when you have to be an asshole, but overall you're not an asshole.

I love this! How many times can I say "asshole" in one post!

The fact that they are are so self-depricating and worry about their faults is what makes these lads so lovable.

I did read that article. I'm not trying to date him or fall in love with him...my intentions are purely sadistical and don't involve love or commitment, I already have that. Just a fantasy...no need to worry.

Being confident and being an asshole are two different things...realistically everyone has the propensity to be a jerk sometimes. I just don't understand the need to constantly state it. Maybe the definition of asshole is different?

asshole- creative, intelligent, good looking, nice clothes, charming, funny

    that works.

Lol, that's exactly how I look at it. I think the Kulash just likes using the word "asshole."

Plus the dude loves confusing people.
  • using the word ass and damian too much is making me loopy.

    assassaassssssss.
  • Faking cockiness (assholiness?) is what Damian does best. smile.gif
  • admittedly, all this use of asshole is getting pretty ridiculous...I'll stop now
  • He even invented the word "assholic" to describe himself.
  • Thank you, Felster for putting up the Denis Leary song. I smell a new OK Go cover song!

Ah, is that what it is?? I can't see the link at work. However, I can and will have the following in my head for about the next hour: A-S-S H-O L-E !!!
  • I don't think he means "jerk." He just means cocky and provocative, in-your-face, rebellious, unconventional, confident...which is cool.
Well, for example, being "badass" is a good thing...it's colloquial...not the dictionary definition of "asshole"...
  • Damian calls himself (and others call him) an asshole, but I really don't see it. Maybe it's because I have actually spoken to the man on many occasions and find him very grammatically-correct, but I think it is mostly the younger people calling him an asshole, because they don't know any other words.

Personally, I find him to be very cynical and sarcastic, not an asshole. He has a great way with words, and turns everything around to sound somewhat anti-whatever he is talking about.

We would either get along really well, or the world would end, if we were left alone in a room to talk, as I have the personality. I have quite the negativity about myself.
  • And what does Tim think about these labels?

we've always been kind of dicks; I don't think we've gotten worse.

  • who said " by labelling you negate me"

I hate labels, really, they're a way for people to get out of knowing other human beings.

I could put a chiquita sticker on my head but that doesn't make me a banana.

That's funny, because my brother and I invented that way back in the 80s (I don't remember exactly which of us said it first). I can't help but wonder whether it traveled.

At least some of the time, it's clear to me that Damian's using "being assholes" synonymously with "making asses of ourselves", like the times when he'll announce that the audience won't see them jumping around like a bunch of assholes on treadmills, but rather, they'll dance like assholes instead (AMW). And it would be in a self-deprecating sense of "we're assholes" that's less-often used, but does exist.

Then there's the stage act which is a kind of ironic, false cockiness if you ask me. If Damian refers to them all as "assholes" during that, I think it's just part of the whole ironic, false cockiness, like when he says they're huge rock stars who live on a jet and only land for concerts. That's entertainment, not true assholery. It's pretty clear (to me, anyway) that it's supposed to be ironic humor which, combined with pretty good acting and confidence, might confuse some people, I guess--especially if they LIKE to think of them as assholes. Likewise, when something smartass-y happens, such as telling people to shut up. I think that's just smartass humor, and people must get it, because it makes them laugh. It's funny and it's part of the entertainment--again, not true assholery. I've "only" been to three concerts, but I see fun-centered cheekiness. To answer your question, then, I just think they say "asshole(s)" because calling it what it really is, wouldn't work.

It's been debated whether they actually can be assholes but geez, I think they're just like everybody else and get annoyed at annoying things when provoked, and I think they show tiredness and frustration, but very rarely. If that makes them assholes, then it makes just about everybody else an asshole too. I find them gracious and friendly to varying degrees, and all-around good guys. I don't believe they're assholes at all, or want to be.

Does that make any sense, or do I need more caffeine?

Edit: Be mindful not to take everything they say as some sort of canon law. Damian himself implicitly warned against doing this, in an interview where he was asked about the boards. No matter how smart or articulate they are, they will speak loosely at times just like the rest of us. wink.gif

    Edit:

Did she? I only read that Damian approached her to ask her if she thought he was an asshole. But maybe I missed something.
