Why do people get so confused in the States when I ask for chips? And even more confused when I ask for vinegar with them... "um, like salad dressing?" NO. VINEGAR
Then I just get weird looks when I ask for sour cream...

Or when you're ordering a sandwich and you ask for tomato (pronounced tomarto, the english way) and they go "to-what now?". SO FUNNY! I have to say tomato the american way before they'll understand. >.<

We do that too. I read somewhere our accent evolved from the British one.
I think my fav example of that is when JFK said "Lisar! Lisar!" on The Simpsons.
We also, of course, drop final r's. Pahk the cah in havahd yahd.

I myself do not do talk like that, although I'd say quite a lot of people I know do.
Yesterday I did say "hahd" instead of "hard" but I quickly corrected myself.
