no, i don't knit... and i'm still pretty new to machine sewing... my machine was easy enough to figure out, 'tis a little frustrating when you can't get the fabric to go in the way you want it to though...
go ask a random old lady off the street! she'll teach ya! j/k but they really do know, that's how I learned...but if you don't want to kidnap a grandma, then go to www.knittinghelp.com, it helped me loads!!!
yeah the magic bullet infomercial cracks me up everytime! as cheesy as it is though, there are definetly times when i'm watching it thinking "ohh jeez that'd be awesome! i would totally make two kinds of muffins every morning!"
yeah...my sister suggested i make something too, so i'm trying to make a bag/purse thingy. not sure if it's really progressing though.
reading is a good one. i only brought a few books to college with me (harry potter, and a couple of mysteries by dorothy sayers) any good books you guys know of?
it'd be awesome if all us nocturnal people/insomniacs could be together. sadly, i'm one of the only people in my dorms that's up so late. so sad.
anyway...i was searching craftster and i found this Paisley Necktie Schoolbag just thought i'd share it with you guys. dunno if i'm ready to tackle a project quite this big yet, but the results are pretty darn amazing.
I want to turn my favorite pair of jeans that don't fit anymore into a purse or messenger bag or something, any suggestions?
Cut off the legs slightly below the crotch. Turn pants inside out. Sew across legs (more than once is a good idea for reinforcement). Use leftover material from legs to make a tube of whatever length you want and attach each end of it to sides of jeans. Sew (more than once, or in an x or some such method to reinforce) it on so you have a strap.
That's basically how I made mine into a messenger bag. I sewed some extra blue fabric to the waistband of the jeans and added a drawstring so the bag stays closed.
Sorry if this makes no sense. It's hard to describe without pictures, and I don't have the bag with me at school so i can't show it to you.
Oh and thanks for the link to that tie bag--I am so excited to make that when I'm home this summer.

Best book of all time: The Time Traveler's Wife. I never cry when I read, but reading the last page I was bawling. It's not a romance novel or anything, it's just flipping awesome.

That sounds perfect! What do you do with the left over legs? I don't want to waste a piece of those jeans, they cost FAR too much.

um my jeans were like $20 so I think I just kept the leftover for scraps for later projects. You could add artful patches to the bag or other articles of clothing/purses if you want (ie. flip over a couple small squares and arrange them in a pattern) or make a small changepurse with a drawstring to go with your purse.
That bag was beyond adorable; it makes me wish I actually had talents with sewing (I tried once ot make a skirt... the result was horrendous).
However, I've found that I get into cleaning sprees when I'm tired where I clean EVERYTHING and find myself, Swiffer in hand, at 5 in the morning with a room reeking of Lysol and Citrosol.
Or I knit (horribly). I made a scarf but had no idea how to cast-off, so it kind of ended up as a sad-looking scarf-ish....thing.

oh yeah. I do the same thing but it's only maybe once every month or so, when the dust starts to get to me, I start cleaning and can't stop. Maybe we have OCD... nah. I doubt it. 409 is my weapon of choice... I'm thinking about investing in the Swiffer Wet but I dunno, has anyone used it before??? How would you rate it or what reviews can you give me?
Oh, I LOVE Swiffer Wet... though I tend to lean more toward any disinfectant wipe anyway. They not only clean off dust, but they get rid of germs too, which makes me smile. [I can't believe I'm discussing cleaning techniques...]
I think I may be a bit OCD when I start cleaning; I honestly can't stop.

What would make a good lining for the bag? Maybe an old TShirt?
sure. I didn't line the bag and I haven't had a problem. Denim is a pretty strong material, after all, and as long as you reinforce the seams on the bottom of the bag and the ones connecting the strap to the bag, I think you could be okay without a liner.

That purse is soooo sweet.
...I thought you were actually talking about chopping off your actual legs.
I'm slow.
