So I was talking to the merch guy about this, and finally understood how the guys wind up touring where they're touring. This actually makes a lot of sense, so I don't know why I didn't think of it before.
Anyway. Basically, in order for the guys to tour some where, there has to be a concert promoter who's willing to drag them out there, or if they're affiliated with a local record label and their record is doing well in that area, they may be the ones who bring them out there.
What it comes down to is whose going to pay for them to get out there. They can't just jet off to anywhere in the world; somebody's got to be paying the bills, and, like I said, that means there has to be a concert promoter or a record label who's interested enough to pay those bills. That's why they took the London Koko gig; originally they were only going to tour in Germany, but in order to help finance the tour, they took up the Koko gig.
So basically, they could want to tour in Australia, Japan, India, I don't know where else as much as they want, but if there's nobody will to pay for them to get there or they can't work out some sort of agreement or the dates don't work, etc., they're not going to be touring there, period.
So complaining about it here on the Boards isn't doing you any good. I mean, I'm sure the guys like to know they have fans worldwide, but in terms of deciding where they're touring, it really doesn't do anything. (As far as I know, anyway.) Your best bet is to instead find out which promoters or agencies or local labels handle the band and then make it clear to them that you (and a lot of other people) want them to play by you. And the more popular a band is in an area, the more likely the record company will take notice and foot the bill, so getting your friends into OK Go and getting them to buy their record is also a good idea. That's how I think it works, anyway.
Thanks for that! I always wondered how it was decided. That makes a whole lotta sense.
Didn't know where else to put this, and it certainly doesn't need it's own thread. But I just had a question. A classmate of mine thought he heard on the radio that Ok Go where going to be passing thru the Phoenix area again. Having learned/read all the great things you guys post, I think that that classmate is mistaken. I just want to know, if anyone can confirm this for me. Am I right or is my classmate?

That is, in a nutshell, how I originally thought touring and promoting worked. It makes sense that if someone wants them out to a city bad enough, they'll book them there.
You confirming this also solidifies my belief (and now fact) that my city (Indianapolis) is one giant ball of laziness. Although it is a well-known city, we do not get ANY decent bands to play here, or anywhere in the vicinity. Sometimes a band will play ALL AROUND Indiana (Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky), but completely skip us. A local radio station even jokes "Oh by the way, xxxxx band is on tour right now, but as usual, don't expect to see a stop in Indiana..." This is why I get to rely on train tickets and generous people (sherib) to jet me to awesome shows in Chicago, or sureeyesawake to work her PR magic and book OK Go in Cincinnati.
(Please, please, PLEASE let me get admitted to graduate school in Chicago. I will be making music magic there.)
aaw, lucky New Yorkers. Man, I wished I lived in NY.
That's up at Cornell University! It's a good 4 or 5 hours northwest of NYC. They don't get a lot of OK Go up there, so that's really good for those folks. Although, The All-American Rejects? My husband and I had a great conversation about them during the VMAs.
Paris Hilton: These guys are a great band, and the lead singer is really cute too! Rachel, upon looking at said lead singer: Ugh, He's not cute. He kinda looks like a monkey. Adam (husband): You're right. singing Move along, move along, 'cuz I'm flinging poo! Rachel: haha, but seriously? He's Not Cute! He's no Damian Kulash. He probably goes home at night crying, wishing that he were Damian Kulash. Adam: He probably goes home and watches "Dunstan Checks In."
That show is in Ithaca which is near Buffalo and Albany. That's at least 4 hours north of NYC. Not much goes on up there.
Just so you know, Ithaca is actually a good 3 hours from Albany, and at least 2.5 hours from Buffalo. It's closest to Binghamton (Where I went to college YAY!!!!) and Syracuse.
Sun Apr 22 '07 (7:00PM) - Ithaca, NY - Barton Hall OK Go, The All-American Rejects , The Whigs
Ithaca is so lucky to have OK Go on Earth Day.
BTW... The All-American Rejects?!? ugh. What is up with all these whiny bands that are currently touring with? Snow Patrol, The Fray?? I much rather listen to opening bands pissing on pandas rather then whiny achy breaky love songs. Sorry to those who do like them. I just couldn't get myself to listen to the whole Snow Patrol CD. It was too depressing...
I just hope OK Go is headlining. And also, STOP TOURING!!!

Oh dear. Both Damian and Tyson are so alike..I expect shenanigans all around for that show, haha.
Speaking of Tyson, my friend said he was at the DMV yesterday trying to get his motorcycle license, but he failed the general driving portion of the test. Which is sad, because Florida's got the easiest driving test ever.

There are different difficulties in different states??? :S
So if you pass in one state, do you have to take another test in a state with harder criteeria...? Lol

Well, the test varies from state to state and you have to take the test for the state you currently live in. In Florida, you don't have to know how to parallel park, for example(which really screws us over when we go elsewhere). In other states, I think you have to be able to do it to pass the test.

Sorry for your friend btw...
hahah, I phrased that weirdly. It was Tyson who failed the test, not my friend! so, no worries! (unless you want to worry about rock stars who can't drive, then go ahead! )

Thats around an hour away from me! Why isnt this show listed on their site?
Christine, you're from upstate????? I thought you were in Providence?
Nope. I drove 4 hours for that concert :] (and they were totally worth it)
Actually, I take that back. Its around 3 hours away from me (apparently I can't multitask on map quest), but its close enough!
