ewww, I have to read Moby Dick before school starts. and A Doll's House and Kite Runner, both of which I actually wanna read. But Moby Dick....ugh.... On the other hand, I'm really freaking bored with summer, and I really want it to be over soon. So I dunno.
I actually really enjoyed A Doll's House (though Hedda Gabler is better and soooo much creepier). Moby Dick is such a waste. I don't care if it's a "classic." The first 100 pages are good... until he goes out to sea and decides to talk about the history of whales for chapters and chapters on end. It's worth reading for the sake of being able to say you read it, but it's kind of something you have to just buckle down and do it.
Who knows? You could be one of the people who actually enjoys it!
Also, after feeling super guilty about a bad drinking experience (bad experience 2 of 2. Apparently I didn't learn the first time), I was given the recommendation to put rubber bands around my wrist. I would choose a number of rubber bands before I went out and would take one off each time I finished one drink. That way, I would know when I had told myself to stop (whether or not I listened was of course a different story).
That's a genius idea! I might have to try that.
Two bad experiences with alcohol? I've had four. One of which, I'm extremely ashamed to admit, resulted in me being admitted to the ER because I couldn't handle my diabetes, I was too drunk. I now know never to drink absinthe again. That wasn't a good night.
I have tonnes of homework to do as well! And I'm supposed to be reading a french book, but there is NO way anyone is going to get me to do that. I am SO dropping that bloody subject.
Yeah, absynthe is a whole other ball park. That's not just alcohol, that's a halluciningen!! No No, I'll never touch that stuff. Fortunately it's illegal here, but when I went to Mexico there were a bunch of people doing it. No, I want no part of that!!
Another thing I like to do when drinking is drink a glass of water for every drink I have. One it keeps you hydrated so you're less likely to get a hangover, and also it keeps me from drinking my alcoholic drink because I'm thirsty. I think almost everytime I've gone over my limit has been because I had a drink that tasted good and I was sucking it down from thirst, but of course that only made me more thirsty and... yeah.. disaster.

Aw sweetie, I'm just glad that you're OK. (and 4 bad experiences aren't that many relative to many others)
Absinthe is allowed in Canada as well. Did you get the halluciningenic effects? The people I know who've had it all claim it didn't effect them, except of course for getting roaring drunk. I have yet to try and and I think I might steer clear of it, simply because I've found out I hate most all hard alcohol (except for gin. Gin and cran is my lifesaver). It took me half a year to find out (and an experience where I drank too much, got sick, and ended up in a webcomic. What?), but at least I did.
I'm honestly not that much of a drinker now. I'd much rather have a couple of glasses of wine and watch Disney movies than take shots and spend the rest of the night in a queasy haze.

I'm not sure whether or not it's legal here, to be honest. I think my friend got it from Greece.
And I wasn't planning on trying it, but I was already rather drunk on rum, as the boy whose lap I was sitting on does an amazing Johnny Depp impression so we were pretending to be pirates and drinking rum, straight, from the bottle. Then someone handed me the absinthe. I don't honestly know if I had any hallucinogenic effects - I remember taking a swig (I was later told it was about 5 shots worth, in one gulp), my friend saying "Oh fuck, Alice, you're not supposed to do that..." and then it's all a blank until I woke up in the ER. Apparently a good couple of hours passed during that blank, and I was conscious the entire time. I just haven't a clue what happened. I don't touch spirits anymore, except for martini and lemonade - I can only drink wine as well, now. And yes - it tasted absolutely foul. Haha. It's 80% ethanol or something. That's just nuts. I don't recommend it.
Amy - what's a web comic? I commend you on learning your lesson and steering clear - I never managed that. And I once made the mistake of letting someone else make a drink for me without me seeing what went in it. I don't know what it was, but it got me seriously drunk and ill.
Also - I just got my back statement, and have realised that I NEED to get back to school, pronto. In England, we have this system whereby students in their last two years of school (which aren't compulsary) whose parents are on a low income receive up to £30 a week from the government. The amount you receive depends on how much your parents earn - the less your parents earn, the more you receive. The idea is that you use the money to buy school equipment, etc. But a lot of people I know use it on clothes.... Anyway, I get the full £30 a week, which is a serious help - I've been away for a few weeks and I've spent so much money without anything but my saturday job wages going in! And I get bugger all from my job. Eeeek much. I need school, because I need money. How screwed up?

Mmm, I wanna read A Doll's House. My mom really likes Ibsen, so I might read more of him anyways.
Moby Dick, however... well, I'm not looking forward to it. I think it's a custom among teachers to put the most boring, excruciatingly long book for Summer Reading, which makes sense because then we don't have to deal with it during school, but it certainly puts a damper on the end of the summer. (I've had to read Great Expectations over the summer... and Walden....shudder...)

haha, Meg, didn't you hear? Moby Dick is now the official state book of Massachusetts. Some kids up in like Lowell suggested it to Beacon Hill and now, here we are with a state book.
On the other hand, I'm really freaking bored with summer, and I really want it to be over soon. So I dunno.
omg, i feel the same way!!! but u have nothing to worry about, ur smart milky. i am a dummy. im so scared about college and where im going and if i should stay here in l.a. or give another state, even another country a try [plus, if i'll even get into any colleges anywhere] oh, and i actually think i have less ap's this year than i did last year. i get my schedule next week
i only have to read 2 not-so-boring books cuz im taking regular english, 1984 and eats, shoots, and leaves, still blah.
I'm scared about college too. Sure, I'm only going into 11th, but still, it's so close. I don't know where I wanna go, I'd like to live at home, will I be able to? Will they take me since I have never taken any photography classes? My school doesn't offer any. And I want to go for another thing too, because I'm afraid I wont get a good job and will become like a struggling artist or something, and if I do go for a two things, will I be able to fit it in? What will it be? Will the college have both?
awww Ambie that sounds great! honestly, I'm glad it's worked out for you. just can't let Carlos get too jealous of that other boy, right? haha actually, now that I think about it, forget Carlos. and I'ma shut up now, cause it feels weird to not be in the Interpol thread.
ahem
anyways, I hope you keep having fun and I hope you really do make some great, lasting friends out of this!

haha actually, it wasn't that bad a book. and he certainly goes on long enough about nantucket and new bedford. and you know, massachusetts and whaling- it kind of goes together.
and I'ma shut up now, cause it feels weird to not be in the Interpol thread.
Haha. Yeah, it does seem weird to be talking about our imaginaries outside the thread.
Ambie, you're making me wish I went to SD!! Not that Santa Cruz isn't great, but I kind of think I would have liked it there slightly more. If only they accepted me. I'm so happy you found an organization like that! I've been looking for something that puts on concerts here, but we don't really have concerts. I'm so tempted just to go to one of the venues downtown and force them to hire me. So what if I'm an 18 year old girl. I'd make a kick-ass bouncer. I hope my college life turns out like yours. That's how I've been imagining it, but so far, it hasn't happened. I guess I have to give it a few more years. I'm gonna go add you on Facebook!!
aww, ambie, that sounds sexy!! haha. i really hope my years at a uni are like that. i'm so scared of leaving high school i'm thinking of applying to sd too. i doubt i'll get it tho. and how can this garrett guy not like you?!?! being part of team strokes and iwi - you're the coolest chick ever!! ;] hehe.

Santa Cruz is pretty nice. The only thing that I don't like is the lack of concerts. I've been so spoiled living in San Francisco. We get a few good shows, but I'm missing so many shows back in SF. If you're not a big fan of nature, then it may not be the best place. I literally have a forest outside my window. I applied to Santa Cruz, Davis, San Diego, and Berkeley. I wouldn't have applied to Berkeley except my dad made me. I thought it was a waste of $60 and it was. Santa Cruz was the only one that accepted me, but it was like second on my list, so I was okay with it.
That's great, Amber! I'm glad to hear college is finally the way it's supposed to be for you.
I'd have to say this year's going pretty well for me, too. Except for my lack of driver's license (don't get me started on THAT, though), this is shaping up to be a pretty awesome senior year of high school. Even if AP classes suck.
Seeing as this appears to be the "add me on facebook" thread, I'll put myself out there too. I'm Rachel Greenspan. My picture is all sorts of indie, and it's me looking away from the camera in a supercute lavender top. The same top as I'm wearing in my icon on here, just a different picture. Same day though.
