It's good to be back, haven't been on this board in a while. Not that I ever made any huge contributions. Just wanted to say that it was nice meeting Kalinda and Angela at the show on Saturday
How was it in the front?? My sister and I were upset that you two weren't the first to go through the doors after all that time you had waited.
The people who organized it must really like "Freaks and Geeks..." (it's a TV show, for those who don't know).
Yeah, when I was telling my sister about it, she said, "It's like a Freaks and Geeks reunion!"

Take it easy,
Rosanna
It was nice meeting you and your sister because you two are awesome. We'll definitely see each other again!
I was kind of upset that I wasn't the first person to go in, but no one went to sit in the front row, so Angela and I were front and center and it was amazing! I was basically right in front of Damian.
I got to LA at around 3. Half an hour before I was supposed to arrive. I took the red line to the Vermont/Sunset station and walked over to the Steve Allen Theater. I took a quick look around and since I didn’t see anyone, I decided to go to the Starbucks down the street and hoped that I might be lucky enough to see Damian in there. I got some coffee and sat down and drew a horrible little birthday card for Andy, but he never came in. I decided to go back to the Theater and just wait. I walked around it again because I wasn’t entirely sure where the door was. A sign told me to go to the glass doors in the parking lot, but when I got there, another sign told me to go to the gate on the right. Luckily the gate had a sign saying “Entrance” on it that I had missed. So I started waiting at about 4:45. It started sprinkling, so I decided to hide out underneath a staircase instead of getting my umbrella out. A little later, Rosanna and her sister showed up and we found out that we liked a lot of the same bands. At around 5:15, I could hear them sound checking “Here Come the Girls.” At around 5:45, I hear Tim’s voice, so I say, “I hear Tim!” right as he walks past me on his phone. He starts walking around the parking lot talking on his phone. At around 6, he starts walking back towards the entrance, so I walk up to him and give him the box of brownies (I’ve been trained to always bring brownies). He says something like, “You made us brownies? You’re crazy.” So, it took 14 shows for him to finally admit that I’m crazy. I thought it would have been a lot sooner. Anyway, I also asked if he would sign a birthday card for my friend and he said, “Of course, of course.” So he signs it and then he asked me if I was going to the show and I said yes. Then he said that he had to go back inside, so I let him go. Then Angela came! Except I didn’t know it was her until a little later. At around 6:20, we all walked over to the entrance so Rosanna could ask about how the standing room tickets are going to work. One of the girls working there told us that doors were at 7:30 and that they were going to let standing room people in at 8:05. Then she asked if we were going to stay on the patio (there was a patio in front of the main doors that was closed off by the gate we were waiting next to, but the gate was open so that’s how we walked in). We asked if we could and she said yes, so we waited on the patio where we could see inside through the glass doors. I saw Damian, Tim, and Andy onstage, but no Dan. There were also two girls on the stage singing, but I couldn’t see them well enough to know that it was Zooey Deschanel and Becky Stark. Plus, I didn’t know what Becky Stark looked like. I had only heard her name before. At some point, Patton Oswalt arrived and he did a kind of awkward hello wave towards us and went inside. At around 7, Andy came out. He saw me and said, “I thought I recognized that brownie box.” I always use the same kind of box to package up the brownies. I asked him if he could call Becky and wish her a happy birthday. He said okay and took my phone. So, he talked to Becky. At one point he said something like, “I’m on hold now? I have things to do.” Then when he hung up, I got him to sign her card. Then he went over to take a picture with this girl who was there with her dad. Then he was about to leave, but I stopped him again and asked him if he could make a little sign saying “I love Katie” or “Katie is awesome” and hold it up while I take a picture of him. He did it and then he left. We waited some more while more people started showing up. A little after 7:30, they opened the doors, but since I wasn’t standing right in front of the door (stupid mistake, I know), a couple of other people got in before me. When I got in, Angela had already gotten a spot in the front. Luckily no one else was going towards the front, so I got a seat next to her.
The show didn’t start until around 8:20. Andy, Tim, and Damian walked out and they all sat down. Andy was to the far right of the stage behind some keyboards. I’m pretty sure he was wearing the same outfit he wore at the DC show. Tim was on Andy’s right. He was wearing a sweater with a black jacket over it. He was also playing a Hagstrom that I had never seen before. Damian was on Tim’s right and directly in front of where I was sitting. Damian was wearing a white shirt with a plain black suit and tie. They started playing “Here Come the Girls.” Andy played the guitar while Damian had a tambourine and a maraca. After that they played a little song about Ben Karlin. All I can remember from it is the last line, which was, “It’s muthafuckin’ Ben Karlin.” Then Ben Karlin came out and talked for a bit. After he left the stage, the boys started playing a song similar to the Ben Karlin song except this time it was about Paul F. Tompkins, the host for the show. He told a story and it was pretty funny. He also said something about how there were at least two people in the building with mustaches (himself and Tim) tonight, but there might be more. It was kind of weird because since OK Go was the house band, they were always on stage, so I would always want to look at them, even when they weren’t doing anything, but then I didn’t want to be creepy and stare at them, especially since they could easily see me looking at them. Anyway, from occasionally glancing at them when they weren’t playing, I could see that they would also laugh whenever someone said something funny. Damian was also smiling/smirking a lot. This is the point where I’m not entirely sure where things go, so I’m just going to list them.
Patton Oswalt came out to read his essay thing and he introduced Busy Phillipps, who read parts of it. A little later they brought out Seth Rogen. He read two lines and stayed onstage for the rest of it even though he didn’t do anything else.
Paul F. Tompkins said something about how OK Go was on Letterman recently. Damian: Actually, it was just me and this brass band called Bonerama. Paul: You left OK Go and joined a brass band. Tim…Andy, did you two feel like you should have stuck with the tuba and the trumpet and then you could have been on Letterman too. (Tim and Andy laughing) Paul: So I guess this is the reunion of OK Go and you guys (audience) didn’t even know that they broke up! (Damian and Tim hug, big awww from the crowd) Paul: So there’s not going to be any cold silences in the car ride home, right? (cold silence)
Jason Nash came out to read his piece. At one point, he’s talking about how he was in a karaoke contest with his friend and they were singing “Say, Say, Say” by Michael Jackson, so he started singing and dancing. The boys started playing the song and sang too.
At some point, Paul F. Tompkins came out and said, “Who wants to hear OK Go play another song?” We all cheered and then Damian said, “We were going to play a song based on the piece that I wrote for the book. It was going to be 2500 words set to music, (and now I really don’t remember what he said). Instead, we’re going to play a song called A Million Ways.” At this point, I stopped trying to sneak out my camera when I realized that Damian wasn’t going to be talking about Ella. Basically it was just like when they play it acoustically except Tim plays his bass.
Zooey Deschanel and Becky Stark came out to sing a song that Becky had written to get her sister and her boyfriend to stay together. Becky said something about how Zooey was the only person in the world she would want to sing the song with. Then she turned and looked at Damian and said, “Oh, and you guys too.” The song was pretty cute and Zooey had a little harmonica necklace like the one I have, except I wasn’t wearing mine that night. I totally would have played mine if I had been wearing it. I was also really happy that I got to see Zooey sing because I couldn’t get tickets to her show with M. Ward in San Francisco this weekend.
At some point, Paul F. Tompkins made fun of the way Andy was sitting. He was just sitting with his arms folded across his chest.
Paul also said that Andy Richter wasn’t there because he was shooting a movie in New Zealand. Then he made a joke about NZ/Lord of the Rings. He said that Andy’s piece was called, “Girls Don’t Make Passes at Boys With Fat Asses” so they got another fat ass to replace him. Then he introduced James Franco, who was the other person in the building with a mustache (and just like Tim’s mustache, I don’t like it). James came out and walked up to the mic stand, but Paul had forgotten to put the mic back, so James started talking, but stopped when he realized that there wasn’t a mic. So he walked over to the edge of the stage and stood right in front of me! But then Paul put the mic back into the mic stand, so James moved back over there and started reading.
Then Paul came back out and said the show was over and the boys played some music and then it was really over. It was only an hour, so it was around 9:20 when it ended. It took awhile to get out because everyone was in the aisle. I decided to buy the book (cost me $26, which I think is more than in any store) and Jason Nash was sitting at the table signing them after people bought them, so he signed mine. He said hello to me, but I wasn’t really paying attention to him because I thought I saw Trish, so obviously I was quite distracted. I’m going to say it wasn’t her, unless she turned super blonde and is pregnant. Anyway, he signed my book and I wanted to get Ben Karlin to sign it too, but there were a lot of people around him, so I went back outside and found Angela. I really wanted to meet Seth Rogen, James Franco, and Zooey Deschanel, but I only ended up meeting James.
Basically I just waited outside. Tim finally came out. He saw me and said hi, but then he had to do something and he said he would be right back. He didn’t come back until around 10, but Damian was with him this time. They were talking to some people, but after they finished, they turned towards me so I asked them where Dan was and the answers I received were, “He’s dead” and “He’s not here.” Damian asked how I was and I said I was alright. I asked him to sign Becky’s card and he did. Then he looked at the front of the card and said, “There’s nothing on the front!” I said, “I know! I’m going to draw it when I’m on my way back to San Francisco.” The real reason was that I already had an idea for what I wanted on the card, but I didn’t want Andy to see, so I wasn’t going to draw it until after he had signed it. I also got him to sign my book. He started drawing Angry Bird and then I said something about how I wanted him to draw Angry Bird on my shoe because I had gotten new shoes and I missed the Angry Bird that he had drawn on my old shoes. Then he started talking about how Angry Bird is different each time he draws him. So I give Damian my silver Sharpie and lift up my foot, but Damian tells me to put it on the ledge on the wall so I don’t have to stand on one foot. He draws a little Angry Bird. I forgot to ask for my Sharpies back and Damian forgot to give them back, so now Damian has my black and my silver Sharpies. I’ve got lots of black ones, so I don’t care about that, but I had just bought that silver Sharpie because my old one is running out. I also gave a very horrible description of my trip to Damian. I said something like, “At 8. I left San Francisco at 8 in the morning. I took a bus down here. I got here at 3. I got here here (meaning the Steve Allen Theater) at like 4 because I had nowhere else to go.” He asked if I bought tickets online and I said yes. At first I didn’t understand why, but then I remember someone saying something about how it sold out within a couple of minutes, so I guess that’s why Damian was wondering. I mentioned how I liked the EP. I also said something about how they haven’t played San Francisco or on the West Coast for such a long time. He started saying something about shows, but I really can’t remember what. He also said something that referenced the fact that Angela and I were front row. Damian asked if Angela and her brother were from San Francisco too. I told him no and that I was the only one crazy enough to come all the way down. He asked if I was going back tonight or tomorrow. I said tonight and he said something like, “Wow. Well, I hope you get home safely.” I told him I would and then he said that he was about to head home and I said, “Me too.” So we said bye and we all left.
That's pretty much it. I have a horrible memory, so after two days, I've already forgotten when stuff happened and what happened.
Oh, I forgot to mention that you all should totally buy the book. I haven't finished it yet, but just glancing at Stephen Colbert's essay makes me laugh. Plus, it's only $20 in the OK Go store and it's autographed by Damian.
I asked him if he could call Becky and wish her a happy birthday. He said okay and took my phone. So, he talked to Becky. At one point he said something like, “I’m on hold now? I have things to do.” Then when he hung up, I got him to sign her card.
So that's the mumble that I heard. Now I kinda feel bad. *sigh*

I don't think I've ever seen Angry Bird. And your convo with Damian sounds awesome. These guys are the best bunch of guys out there.

So far my favorite essay is Lesson #4 Persistence Is For Suckers by David Wain. And Lesson #6 made me a cry a little.
Great write up!!! Even though it was short it sounds like the show was a blast.
Aww, thanks for the write up, Kalinda! You are so thoughtful to think of Katie and Becky and all of us during your fun. You are awesome. Hey, when you were talking to Damian, where did Tim go? Or did he do that cute thing where he stands near Damian listening and looking around?
Thanks for all the lovely comments guys! Glad you liked it!

This is the Angry Bird from my old shoes, back when they were new. This is still my favorite one. I don't like the new Angry Bird as much. Half of the conversations I've had with Damian are about Angry bird, but I've only had like 6 real conversations with him, so it's not really that many.

Don't feel bad! He said it in jokingly and I think he was saying it more towards me than you. I'm always bugging him about something.

At first he was standing off to the side, but then he started talking to one of his friends and then went back inside before I had finished talking to Damian.

Double darn. MUST SEE pic of you and James.
Nope. It was just Damian, Tim, and Andy.
It's not really the best picture...of either of us. I might post it later though.

Thanks for the awesome write up, Kalinda!
So that's the mumble that I heard. Now I kinda feel bad. *sigh*
Very cool!!!
Aww
Now I can't wait to see it!! Hurry Mr. Postman!!
And now I want the book even more
...
but I have no moneys.
I can't believe you met Angela! And I especially can't believe the part where the world doesn't combust upon the two of you seeing each other
I'm so glad I didn't miss this thread
Aww, they all sound so nice! I would be to scared to go and ask them to draw on my shoes hahaha!
I bet you they loved the brownies you made for them!!
There are too many exclamation marks. I think its because I'm really giddy at the moment
...
but I have no moneys.
