Anyways, I never got what 'The House Wins' is about. Is that supposed to mean something? (the phrase 'the house wins'). Is that supposed to mean something different? For not being an English native speaker maybe I'm getting this the wrong way…
It's a gambling reference. Oftentimes, especially at casinos, the dealer is referred to as "The House," ie, the establishment that is hosting the game. It's like the expression "drinks are on the house." You've heard that, right? I'm pretty sure that what Damian meant by that line was that the establishment will always win in the end. We were feeling pretty hopeless in the US when he wrote that album, it was right around Bush's second election.
And Christel, how much do I love you for posting those links? I have been wondering about that show. I am disappointed that there are no shots of Damian with Brobee. ;-)
Oh, I missed you posted that. Thanks, Rachel. Aaaaand now, I get it. :-)
One of my most favorite lines from "The House Wins" is: "If evil were a lesser breed than justice after all these years, the righteous would have freed the world of sin. The house wins. The house always wins."
I miss them playing that song live. It was a KILLER show opener.
An OPENER??? Now that's risky! (in a good way). Clearly they're breaking free from the traditional "two-upbeat songs followed by a heart-melting ballad only to be followed up with two more jaw-dropping epic rock tunes" mold. Or are they?
I can't wait until my first OK Go concert. I've considered buying on of the thumb-drive concerts (just to get a sense for what they do in a live show) but (a) I don't know which one to choose and (b) I'm not sure I want to spoil that moment when I DO first see them live in concert.
My first question would be how the hell they played Return on handbells almost every night... I almost cry every time I -listen- to that song, let alone playing it.. on handbells.. while everybody is cheering.. and she was my friend..
But then maybe not, because I feel like that would be too personal, and even typing it now makes it seem too.. insensitive..
I would jokingly ask for a sock exchange. Like a real one, not a look at my socks, let me look at yours!
Then I would ask where they buy all of their clothes from... the gay in me always wins, really...
I would also probably feel the need to ask about hats. I like hats too much.
And then hugs, of course. ;D
In other words, I would turn into a blubbering fifteen (well.. probably sixteen when/if I finally do get to meet them) year old gayboy. xP
edit: this show is awesome. loved the banter. and am I mistaken, but… all that fuss for Andy… was it for Andy or for Andy Duncan? Cuz I could hear A-Ross but I didn't get all the fuss then cuz PEOPLE WERE LIKE SCREAMING, and then I thought I heard Duncan's voice… confused.
Oh my God, so many songs they don't play anymore on this ;_;

So THAT's which song they use the hand bells for! I'd seen photographs, but I never knew which song that worked with...somehow in my mind's ear it was "While You Were Asleep." Guess I'll have to listen to "Return" with a different ear from here on out.

heres a link for their performance for Return on handbells :)
Dingo, they used to do "What To Do" on the handbells before "Return." The song switch is a pretty recent thing. And I know you said that you were unsure whether you wanted to spoil the experience, but someone's already linked you "Return," so here's "What To Do" just to round it all out. ;)
