  • Matt Smith has been confirmed as the new star of Doctor Who.

The actor will replace current Doctor David Tennant when he quits the show next year.

The BBC revealed the news during a special episode of Doctor Who Confidential and the announcement follows months of speculation about which actor would be stepping into the TARDIS.

Twenty-six-year-old Smith is the youngest actor ever to play the Doctor - Peter Davison previously held that honour after playing the Doctor when he was 29 back in 1981.

Matt Smith will be familiar to some viewers from his roles in political drama Party Animals and BBC One drama Ruby In The Smoke, in which he starred opposite Doctor Who's Billie Piper.

Smith, who was cast in the role at Christmas said: "I've got this wonderful journey in front of me where I've got this six months to build this Time Lord - and that's such an exciting prospect."

David Tennant will play the Doctor in four one-off specials next year before Smith takes over in Spring 2010.

  • Look, Look!

A member of T.Rex appearing on the celebrity line-up in an old ep of "Nevermind the Buzzcociks." Gosh, this show was so much less exciting without the amazing Jupitus, Bailey, Amstell trio. (Jupitus looks lonely without them.)

According to a report in The Sunday Mirror, Michelle Ryan is being lined up to play the new assistant to 11th Doctor Who Matt Smith. She memorably rose to fame as EastEnders' long-suffering Zoe Slater.

An insider told the tabloid newspaper: "Michelle's been in secret talks with BBC bosses. They are likely to announce her as Doctor Who's new assistant very soon. She is perfect for the role. She is good-looking and the right age to star alongside Matt. Everyone agrees they look great together and reckon fans will think they're the perfect team too." It's been over a year since the former 'Enders star attempted to crack Hollywood with sci-fi remake Bionic Woman. Falling ratings and the writers' strike didn't help matters and the show was axed, lasting just one series. Since then, she's been seen in the BBC's Merlin and is hoping new ITV1 series Mr Eleven will fare better than her US show. She will play schoolteacher Saz Paley in the two-part tale penned by Shameless writer Amanda Coe. The title is based on research which suggests many women settle down with their 11th partner. Saz becomes obsessed with the idea and eventually marries number 11, but an old flame confesses he is actually her 10th.

The supporting cast includes fellow Walford veteran Sean Maguire, who played Aidan between 1993 and 1994. Another British star to decamp across the Atlantic, he starred in hit spoof Meet the Spartans. Get a flavour of the now defunct Bionic Woman in our gallery below.
  • ^^ luls, I missed that article. Anyways, Michelle Ryan was in last weekend's Easter special as a one-off companion, but nothing more. It was alright, nothing special, but solid.

Anyways, I saw the movie The History Boys the other day, (it was fantastic, omg so much love! wub.gif wub.gif) and in researching the actors in it, was led to the show Beautiful People- I guess it aired in the fall on BBC2? I remember the voice overs at the end of NMtB talking about it, lol biggrin.gif
Sam Barnett, who was Posner in History Boys, plays the grown up Simon Doonan and narrates the flashbacks.
Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had seen it/what people thought about it? I'm iffy so far, but Sam Barnett is worth watching anyways, and there've been some good moments. The young Simon and his friend Kylie are fantastic.

So, yeah, just wondering if anyone else had an opinion about it smile.gif
  • So on a totally different topic...

No more Simon Amstell on NMTB

    Hello.

I am Simon Amstell. Here is some news, should you be interested in this sort of thing. I will not be hosting another series of the fun pop quiz, ‘Never Mind the Buzzcocks’.

When I first took on the role of hosting ‘Never Mind the Buzzcocks’, my only hope was to bring joy and laughter to the world and if I was lucky, put an end to war, disease and poverty. Now that I have achieved that, I plan to concentrate on my live work.

    Thank you.

Please now continue to enjoy your life as best you can.

    Good evening.

They are doing a new series, Phil Jupitus confirmed it on his Twitter a while back, but it won't have Simon, and it won't have Bill, obvs.

    Soooooo idk.

For me, at least, it kind of helps to know that Noel Fielding is taking Bill Bailey's place permanently.
  • True. That is kind of awesome, and it means I probably will keep watching no matter who takes over from Simon. Or if they do the guest host thing again.
  • Love Noel Felding. But I just can't imagine the show withouth the dynamic trio. It's been so lovely with them. Even this season was severly missing something without Bill. Bah, I'm gonna miss the Simon!
  • Does this mean that youll then have more time to create fresh designs and stop repackaging the same old stuff like weve been seeing every month to include the most recent Ja Fargus revisited?
