  • Well I live in pohdunk, so I don't think anything I hear is new. Therefore, this is my all-time favoritest post EVER. If I had been wearing socks, you guys would've rocked them off.

I'm going to third for Spoon, because while they're nowhere near new having just released something like their 6th album, they are indeed quite awesome.

Some other people that are probably old news to you but are nevertheless wicked:

    M. Ward (Gravelly new-folk goodness. Newest album is eclectic but grows on you. I still prefer Transfiguration of Vincent, but am PSYCHED about seeing him next weekend *woot woot* [yes, I just wooted])

Mike Ruekberg (Did several songs for Dummy--an awesome movie btw--and finally released an album so I don't have to playlist the soundtrack anymore.)

Clem Snide (I haven't a clue what to say, but if you like the last two you'll like him too.)

Pete Droge (If you want something vaguely Petty-esque to sleep to, I got his newest for $1. I mean, why not?)

Some good punkish girl-fronted bands that're sadly going to get grouped together:

Tsunami Bomb (Disregard most of their newest album, hell if I know what happened there), Bikini Kill, The Eyeliner, The Dresden Dolls (cabaret punk), The Gossip, The 5,6,7,8's (Kill Bill soundtrack--crazy asian-american chick rockers), and of course if you haven't heard Sleater-Kinney (You've had 10 years) it's about f'ing time.

People you might've passed up in the last couple years, but who I deftly caught thanks to the New Yorker's club page:

Ludo, The Walkmen, The Libertines (their new album is even better than the last believe it or not), The New Pornographers, The Unicorns, Ima Robot, The Decemberists, The Sleepy Jackson, The Rosebuds, Kings of Leon

Stuff that you've more likely than not heard but should hear again (read: past their 15 minutes but still pumping out albums--or their websites are keeping their 15 loyal fans in suspense by claiming they are at least):

Madrugada, Old 97's, Death Cab for Cutie, Interpol, Paul Burch, Yo La Tengo, Matt Suggs, Versus, Imperial Teen, The Undertones, The French Kicks, The Cramps, The Ladybug Transistor, The the the...hell, I'm tired, and I lost at sucker bowling yet again tonight. Why does my wrist always turn?! Tonight the trophy was a bubble blower with a humping frog too. *sigh* unsure.gif

So yeah...I think ska is a really underrated genre, and I haven't had much exposure to it since leaving Las Vegas, so if anyone wants to recommend some new ska bands I'd be most appreciative.
  • i saw m. ward w/ bright eyes at a taping of austin city limits. he was kind of... creepy, ha ha. he just had a very intense expression, especially in the eyes. he was quite good though.
