Whoa!! That's so crazy!! I'm a midwesterner too, Darbie... Michigan to be exact. I had no idea... Maybe I'm naive, but I had NO idea we could actually get earthquakes that produced much of anything...
Yeah, ummm, first Nottingham, now Indiana. What's with all these Earthquakes happening all sorts of far away from Fault lines?

My mom calls me this morning to ask if we and everything was OK from the EARTHQUAKE. I gave her a WTF and I guess when she was getting ready early this morning she felt a tiny "shake" for a second. Crazzaayyyyy.

i've been researching earthquakes all morning now, haha, there actually is a fault in the midwest called the new madrid fault, just doesn't produce large magnitude activity very often...

Ooooh have fun, GirlInTheDark! I always feel like it's going to be a disappointment and a waste of time, but it almost never is. Hope you have a great time!

And the New Madrid seismic zone doesn't produce big seismic activity that often, but when it does, it's HUGE. (That's actually true of a lot of lesser active seismic zones; over time, they produce bigger earthquakes than, say, the faults in California, because the energy stays built up over a longer period of time.) The earthquakes that occurred there in 1811 and 1812 were pretty much the same magnitude as the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. The only reason they didn't cause as much damage as the San Francisco earthquake was because the midwest wasn't heavily populated in the early 1800s.
