I've done the same thing, one time it worked out and the other it didn't. With the one that worked out it was fantastic and we got on great for about a year but it just fizzled out when i went to university. Then i met this other girl who i got really really close too, and i pretty much fell in love with so i had to say something jus to ease my own mind and she didn't think it'd work and we dont speak so much now. But im glad i asked cos it let me get over it and move on. If i hadn't i would of been going crazy!
